Whatever you do, do NOT try to be clever by mixing in mulch, sticks, twigs, leaves, lawn clippings, etc., basically any non-decomposed organic material (only plants though, except maybe eggshells), as it'll just leach the nutrients from the actual soil, especially the nitrogen, and stunt your plants. I found this out the hard way. It's ok to put all that on the bottom, in fact it's preferable as it makes for great drainage and gives composting critters, fungi and bacteria something to munch on. Just not mixed into the soil.
As for the soil you can use a mix of outdoor potting soil, garden soil (not too much though), compost (we get multiple 40lb bags for free from our local municipality), manure, and peat moss or coir. Plus whatever amendments you think you'll need for whatever you intend to grow, e.g. fertilizer, blood meal, bone meal, organic fertilizer, etc. Mix it all well and you're good to go. You'll be amazed at the results. Just make sure to water regularly and not let the soil dry out.
