For what it's worth, I bought this very bed x3 last year and set them up. They're still all shiny and in good shape after one Iowa winter. The metal is pretty thin, and you'll notice the sides of the bed flex a bit if you're walking around to press down the soil. They've held up so far though with several veggies doing well in them this spring/summer. I wouldn't hesitate to buy more if my tiny city lawn had room.

I ordered this yesterday after searching Amazon. It's funny, the company is likely making an absolute killing selling these, but for our purposes, a raised strawberry bed, I think it will be really helpful. I only bought one, but if it's good, there's similar design 12'x4'x1' for $59 after $10 coupon. https://www.amazon.com/Land-Guard...NCF6&psc=1

Yeah, pass. Would rather buy a Chinese made product at a local store than the Amazon no name stuff.

I got three of these last year at like $89 each and they are awesome. Grew all sorts of stuff in my beds. Hardest part is filling them up with dirt.

Why would you want to press down the soil?

Raised beds are a great way to grow vegetables but realize that even a 1 foot high one is going to need a LOT of soil, and you're going to want it to be high quality or what's the point. There are all sorts of sites and YouTube videos that show you how to save money on soil but they all come down to filling the bottom few inches with organic materials that aren't soil but which will hopefully decompose into soil in a few years, and then filling the rest with good quality soil.

Whatever you do, do NOT try to be clever by mixing in mulch, sticks, twigs, leaves, lawn clippings, etc., basically any non-decomposed organic material (only plants though, except maybe eggshells), as it'll just leach the nutrients from the actual soil, especially the nitrogen, and stunt your plants. I found this out the hard way. It's ok to put all that on the bottom, in fact it's preferable as it makes for great drainage and gives composting critters, fungi and bacteria something to munch on. Just not mixed into the soil.

As for the soil you can use a mix of outdoor potting soil, garden soil (not too much though), compost (we get multiple 40lb bags for free from our local municipality), manure, and peat moss or coir. Plus whatever amendments you think you'll need for whatever you intend to grow, e.g. fertilizer, blood meal, bone meal, organic fertilizer, etc. Mix it all well and you're good to go. You'll be amazed at the results. Just make sure to water regularly and not let the soil dry out.
