Using this is effectively the same as moving the thermostat as you suggest. You put the sensor in the room you want to be a certain temperature and tell the thermostat to use the sensor reading. And not all heating systems are as easy to change as ducts (e.g., hot water radiators) so this is a great alternative.

Got it, thanks OP!

I didn't know this existed. My thermostat is near my entertainment center and gets a false warmer reference than what the area is just 10 feet away. I was going to run new thermostat wire to a new location to fix this. Now, I don't have to do that.

New to this. Could someone explain how would this work? I do feel like that since my thermostat is on the middle floor, it is cooler than my bedroom which my Dyson and baby monitor is reading the temp 1-2 degrees warmer.

My main Nest unit is downstairs, and I have a Nest sensor upstairs in the bedroom. On hot days, the Central AC maintains my set temperature downstairs since that's where we spend most of our time. The upstairs does get a few degrees hotter over the course of the afternoon, and at 9:00pm every day, the Nest switches from the main thermostat to the remote sensor in the bedroom, so that the bedroom temperature comes down to where it needs to be. The lower level does cool off more at that point, but that's okay.

Hey! Absolutely. Basically these give you the ability to have extra temperature points that the smart thermostat uses instead of itself.

For example, at night cool until the bedroom is 75°, or in the morning cool until the sunny front room is 76° and so on.

Would be exactly what you are need for the bedroom like you mention. Hope that helps!

do these work with the newer thermostat yet? Or do you have to have the older 3rd gen "learning" thermostat?

These are great to have if you understand how they do and don't work. Make sure your thermostat is compatible as this doesn't work with the newer Nest versions.

And while this does show up in Google Home now, you still need the old Nest app to switch your thermostat to use one of these as the temperature point (and for setup I think). Odds are you'll be using the old Nest app anyway with the compatible thermostats.

Still limited to older versions as it still relies on the old Nest app.

I have 3 of these but they stopped working well because they do not operate on wifi and have to be within a specific short range of the thermostat. Trying to pick up a signal on a different floor or other side of our house shows a weak signal. Contemplating switching from nest over to ecobee due to the more advanced sensors.

Unless you have a multi-zone set up, all this will do is make your unit run more and over cool or heat parts of house significantly.

The better solution is one of two:
1. Move thermostat to better location (not hard, if you aren't handy, a handyman will do it for you for under $100)
2. If you have an old unit, when you replace, pay the extra $600-1000 for variable speed blower and a multi zone duct set up. This is the right way to have multiple zones as the duct will close rooms that are the right temperature while cooling or heating the ones that aren't... Thus much more efficient

If you have just one room that's hot or cold too much, consider a jump duct to another room to split the temp. Personally not a fan of it, but it does work for holder homes or in situations where you don't want to do the "proper" upgrades.

I switched over to the new top of the line Ecobee. The Ecobee sensors seem to be as equally finicky, or even more, to that range issue from the paired thermostat. Only reason I moved over was to be able to use with Alexa. Otherwise, I would've stuck with Nest.

At least with Nest system, you can get those range repeaters. Not with Ecobee.

We're empty nesters and usually in the same area when we're both home, so we have these in multiple rooms so the temp can be set based on the room where we are. As far as that goes, these are terrific.

A huge caveat for anyone who, like me, is especially interested in the scheduling capabilities based on different sensors in different rooms throughout the day: it's rudimentary at best. The day is split up into predefined chunks of time that are apparently based on a mythical world where no one works second or third shifts, always goes to bed at 9 PM, has exactly the same routine on the weekend/days off as during the work day, etc. It's truly an afterthought and very frustrating, considering how very flexible the regular scheduler is. I won't go on about it, but I'm sure a Google search will easily turn up similar discussions.

I didnt like the google or nest routers either. Using them as range repeaters gave me constant disconnects. I replaced those with an asus zenwifi et12 mesh system.
