Paris is not France, Paris is the word used to fool you Americans to buy things thinking they fancy, Paris name what drops ur jaws when u see it on something even if it's just simple. We in France won't go to Paris unless we have to fly internationally or need something from an administration which is located there. This post isn't about how illegal immigrants made Paris, it's about u paying 300 for a metrix lol

I don't know what happened to my 10+ years old Fluke 87V but it melted and burned all inside. I had very difficult time removing the case due to melted and fused plastic. Does anyone know if this will be covered by Fluke lifetime warranty? My other Fluke 902FC that is 10 years old, still work fine.

Why are you asking here instead of contacting Fluke???

$20 multimeter is more than enough for any normal person, even if she or he is an electrician. $300 bucks ones are good for really crazy ones.

There are plenty of great meter options these days but I love my Fluke 87V. I recommend most people get a 117 but if you do anything as a technician, the 87V does everything and does it well. Some private jet aircraft manuals specify you must use a 87V although I'm guessing there is an "or equivalent" clause. I have the hall-effect AC-DC clampmeter that goes up to 400A and it is extremely useful, even though for the large DC currents I measure working on my custom EVs it is not the most accurate and zeroing is a tiny bit finicky.

All this being said, I'm very intrigued by the bluetooth meters and scopes available on the market. Wireless measurements, calibratable, more compact (because some use your phone as the display), more channels than a meter for signal analysis.. all can be had around $80. I think EEVblog had a decent offering as well as some other kickstarters.

First thing you'll do is measuring currents wrong and burn out its fuse. These meters the 87, are too much for most people. The only reason we have them is because they are cheap for a meter with true rms voltage measurements for frequency way above the 60Hz ac. More expensive ones can do that better but are twice or more expensive. Other features require calibration annually if you want to keep the accuracy otherwise it's just a brag piece. Get a 30usd one if you're just getting started. Once you know what you want, get a fluke and buy 300usd worth of fuses, I.e. about a dozen at 25usd or more each. Fluke has great quality but is still in business to make money. What happens if your product is too good? You can't sell more. So they focus on selling special fuses at about 25 or more a pop. And that is good business for them because students are dumb enough to burn fuses when measuring currents, year after year. Even better, fluke retires a model and its fuse. We have a set of about 25 of model 187(forgot exact number) and we may still have a few fuses to last a bit but someone decided to get a new set because they can still source fuses for the new model. Many cheap meters use common fuses.

Look at the case design for a $20 multimeter and the isolation of the fuses. I wouldn't recommend a $20 multimeter for an electrician. The thing will blow up and injure you if you touch the wrong connections by accident. The fluke will die also, but the case will likely contain the damage.

Seems an overkill unless you are a professional electrician. A $30 Klein Tools MM400 is more than enough for all homeowners and electronics enthusiasts.

Why so expensive? Made in USA or not, multimètre shouldn't be this pricy get Schneider electric metrix or Thompson for less than 30 they do the same job, no wonder we never see these overpriced brands in France people are well educated and such brand won't survive.
I have seen Fluke 87's used all over France. Its the basic meter that you can stick on any power source and not get blown up, even if its 7000 volt distribution or high frequency.

It's a big misconception Americans are dumb and Europeans are more educated. False. I'd say the proportion is about the same.
And the $250 87v fluke would be 700 Euros in France.

It is a total overkill in terms of features and cost for anyone trying to do electronics and occasionally checking their AC outlets, i.e. mostly low voltage, below 36V and sometimes 120-240VAC. Plus expensive fuses you will be paying as you learn electronics. For electricians, I'll leave that to those who consider themselves electricians. Safety is more important than cost.

For those who think Fluke is the best because it's made in the USA, it's just a very good and expensive meter because the brand cares enough about quality and not because where it is made. I've used a couple dozens of them for about 2 decades and they mostly still work. On the other hand, another American brand Keithley that's been making quality desktop meters that used to last for decades doesn't make meters as good as they used to. They started using cheap capacitors for power supply and all my 4 model 2000 meters blew their caps under very light use. Had to replace 8 caps. Less than a dollar worth of parts for a $1000 meter. They shouldn't have done that but they didn't care. Made with care and honoring warranty, that's what we really want. Not made in USA or China or Germain engineering. Those don't equate certain quality or lack of it.

I owned a Fluke 87-3 and 87-5. They are just about my favorite meters other than the price. It is debatable if they are better than some of the Agilent/Brymen meters at a similar price point. However, they are a know, excellent meter with a solid history of reliability, accuracy, safety and factory support. All of these things are likely why they are frequently a default choice when a company is paying the bill. Often the difference between this meter an a cheaper option is a non-issue if that cheaper meter fails calibration and a series of measurements can no longer be trusted.

So would the average or above average DIYer care about the differences? At least some, yes. The average person isn't likely to miss the 20,000 count mode nor even realize if their meter's absolute accuracy is 2-3x less than the Fluke. Most people won't need the CAT III, IV safety (I never did).

However, many people will appreciate the fast auto range response time. They will appreciate the very good touch hold feature (something Brymen is sorely lacking). They will appreciate that the leads are better made than those on most cheap meters (but not as good as those used by Agilent/Brymen). They will appreciate that the screen update rate is fast and the bar graph segment actually responds at 10x the digits. This means it really does behave like an analog needle. I've seen some meters with this bar graph that updates only 1-2 times per second thus it doesn't really have any value in showing trends. Another great thing about the 87-5 is the very fast continuity checker. This is handy when trying to guess which wire goes where. Only a brief contact will trigger the beep. Some meters take quite a bit longer.

So even if this is overkill for a DIYer, many will appreciate the differences even if they are hard/impossible to cost justify.

Auto scaling, back light, capacitance measurements, better test leads, just to name a few.
