For $5-$10, I probably would've bit.
I know $13 isnt too far off but since this stand is totally unnecessary, I'll pass.

Highly doubt it's worth the original $43 price tag but thank you OP! Got one after missing the $6 UGREEN stand recently.

Would it be good to use for a recipe book on the kitchen counter?

That markup is so exaggerated. C.C.C. shows that this thing has averaged $30 for most of a year. Still even at $30 or even $15 this thing isn't worth it.

If I put a piece of wood, such as one of the pre-fabricated shelves in hardware stores, across my chair's arms then I think this will hold a tablet more conveniently than laying the tablet flat.

My guess is no. Look at the tabs at the bottom of the surface for the tablet or smartphone. It appears to me to not be good for printed books. That is only my guess and I hope I am wrong. There are probably other products that would be better for printed books.

I recommend if you get one of these type things, get one that clamps to the phone/tablet. Less chance of knocking it off the stand and being able to adjust the angle downward is great for video calls, videoing something on a table with both hands free, or following instructions while assembling something on the floor while having the tablet/phone out of the way.
