R12SW is sub-par in comparison.

R-120SW is great, R-100SW is great, and the R-10SW is great.. but for whatever reason, they did something weird on the R-12SW where it's very "muddy" and loose sounding in comparison. The 10/100/120SW all give a nice punchy bass, which the 12SW Lacks.

I've owned all 4 (multiples of the R-12SW's because they were cheap) and as much as I prefer the 12", I'd take the smaller 10SW (or 100SW) over the 12SW.

I have the R-12SWi and couldn't be happier... Almost overkill.

May get downed for this, but do yourself a favor and hold out for an on-sale monoprice monolith. Even their 10" will outperform a 12" or 15" cheaper brand by miles.... it does cost more, but if you can swing it, you won't look back...
It depends on rest of your speakers.

This is the Way. Snagged an open box 10" V-2 Saturday night for $349. Saw it posted to SD and now they're OOS. So excited.
That's more than double the price and you need to find an open box. Apples and oranges.

I'm looking for a budget sub, anyone have opinions on this r100 vs the JBL 550p? Besides this being ported and the 550 being sealed, the jbl is only $16 more after a $10 coupon for signing up for their mailing list. TIA

Love this sub in the bedroom, but it's really punchy. Great for music, but I bet it could get annoying in a home theater setup. Even at a reasonably low volume, I can hear it thump throughout the house.

Two subs are the minimum if you want to start to even out the peaks and dips in low frequency response in a typical room. 2 is good. 4 is ideal. It's impossible to get even bass response with 1 sub. Not my opinion. It's physics.

Two 'cheap' subs are better than one slightly better sub. A lot subjective though.

'Bass' a very confusing idea, I recently found out after starting out to build a good budget home audio setup.

Based on my research so far, Dayton sub 1200 is good, PE has it for 180, plus some discount for July 4.

If you can find a used ones - bic formula f12, jbl stage a100p and a120p, Polk hts10, xt12 are good choices.

"Better" is going to rely heavily on setup and placement, which people don't tend to focus on because of bad advice being given out for years to just stick it anywhere.
A "good" sub won't perform to its fullest if poorly placed.
Regardless, science says you can't get even bass in a typical room without at least two subs unless you do a LOT of moving and measuring, and then the results you get will only apply to one fixed seat.

I'm using a pair of svs subs.

Needing a sub: Just snagged a Denon s760h for $240, needing a sub as my old onkyo is dead. Would this be practical for home theater use with the receiver mentioned and onkyo 100w speakers?

From where did you get s760 for $240? I bought from costco for 380 last week.
Also, looking for a subwoofer as well, TY!

299 cert refurb from Denon, link below, same warranty I believe. Mine looked new tbh, the remote like used, go figure. There was a code at that time as well, probably got it for less since went through Cap one shopping for 14% cash rebate. I tried posting the deal but got removed since I mentioned the cap one shopping in the title.
