Perhaps its because some individually-owned establishments are absolutely amazing.

The "Dale" (Ace) Hardware by me is absolutely amazing. It's always impeccably clean and everyone there is incredibly nice and helpful. Somehow most associates even have a lot of hands-on experience with some of their departments. It's always a joy to go and shop there.

Convenient locations and helpful employees that know what they're selling. The whole concept is baked around saving you time in exchange for a few extra bucks.

The Ace near my work always greets me when I come in the door. They have awesome charcoal in stock and the key cutter made me a working key off a bent and mangled one. An associate will literally walk me right to what I want. If I ask questions they get the employee who works the department to answer them. There's this savant kid that can match a fastener in seconds ("that's a 1/4-20 grade 8 stainless bolt 3/4" long. We don't have that size but we do have 1" that will probably work. You can use a hacksaw or a Dremel to cut it in a pinch. Do you need nuts or washers to go with it?"). The old timey hardware store in my town is a little better, mostly because all the guys working are that savant kid with 50 more years of experience.

Compare this experience to going to the edge of town to Lowes where they are always short staffed, nobody knows the products, half the stuff you need is out of stock and the wait to check out is like 30 minutes. Lowes only wins if you are buying lumber or a big amount of pre-ordered materials.

That isle with the tiny screws and oddball bolts, nuts, and other strange fasteners that you can't get anywhere else? That's the only reason I ever go to Ace Hardware. Otherwise I have to order it online and wait days/weeks.

Not everyone lives near an HD or Lowes, or is able to order things online.

Not everyone wants to go to an HD or Lowes, or wants to order things online.

Often find a smaller hardware store is a lot easier to get in and out of quickly instead of navigating around a huge big-box store.
I dread going to the one near me, I will drive the 5 miles to Menards or the 6 miles to Lowes and home depot.

I just don't see how this place stays in business.
I would go to Ace over HD or Lowe's every time if I had one near me. Ace has employees there to help you. HD and Lowe's employees run the other way if they see a customer.

The Ace Hardware near me is fantastic! The employees are helpful and know what they are doing as opposed to a box store on most occasions. On certain things they are very competitive or beat the big box stores in the plumbing and paint department. Shark bite and pex fittings come to mind in plumbing. 25% off a pex fitting bag or shark bite crushes the others in my area.

I was suprised to see this, but yes the pex fitting are a good amount cheaper, unfortunalty the larger packs need to be shipped as they don't have them local by me.

theyre really handy to be near in a city. if you're in some place where ace is near a hd or lowes, then yeah it doesnt really make sense
Seconding this. They pick places without a hd and Lowes. Same model with O'Reily, AutoZone, etc.

But yeah I have a hard time using their coupons even when I live near a Walmart for a lot of it

Not a bad deal. It brings the rake I've been waiting to go on sale, and this actually brings it down to a sale price.

Fiskars Pro 66.25 in. 25 Tine Steel Leaf Rake Aluminum Handle
https://www.acehardware.com/depar...equested=1

It's been stuck at $45 everywhere all year. This would bring it down to $32.49. Only problem is I cant go buy it until weds after work since it seems to be only in stock at the large Ace stores 20+ miles away from my house.

I got a 50% coupon and their prices are still more expensive. They are around the corner so I guess that saves some gas.

i bought a new hose reel and the exact same model was cheaper than HD or lowes so it worked out great for me, might need to see what else they have that i need and is equal or cheaper to the big box stores

They are pretty good for the oddball screws and hardware and have helpfully employees. I just went to HD the other day to get a #8 spacer 3/4" long and was frustrated to find all the packages mixed up and at least half of them were opened and the part stolen by ghetto HD "customers". I'm sure I can find the part at Ace and save time & frustration!

ACE definitely is more expensive then the big corporate hardware stores. But I'll support my neighborhood Ace over those places. I feel with the awesome customer service, it's well worth it. Today, I went in to grab some oil, and at the checkout I told them the last bag of FOGO lump was literally extremely small lump and asked if they'd swap it out if I brought it back. Instead they said keep the bag, we'll just give you a new one. No way Lowes or HD would do that...

Everyone... Don't forget (most) ACE stores price match. I stop there first before heading to the bigger guys (HD, Lowe's, Menards) if they have it in stock. They're happy to have my business and I'm have to give it to them if it saves me a longer drive. Their prices are almost irrelevant.

the rewards offers also stack to no limit in-store. ACE can be super slick if you play your cards right.
