My wife is a hardware engineer in the SSD industry. She estimates prices down another 15-30% within 3-4 months based on current projections.

Edit: she got mad at me when I told her I posted this. The things do for my beloved SD <3

Samsung runs hot. Hynix runs cool.

P31 is probably the most efficient SSD on the market. It can make your laptop last longer in battery mode when compare to other SSD especially PICe Gen 4 ones. On top of that, it also has top performance in terms of PCIe 3 spec.

Agreed. SSD prices dropping another 30% by end of summer!

HOLD THE LIME, people!
30% is a very conservative estimate. You should think outside the box.

Now imagine what it'd be like a year from now. The retailers are in completely panic now, lol.

Even if you are maxed out at Gen 3 on your motherboard, seems more prudent to get the Gen 4 Samsung 980 Pro for $6 more.
980 PRO's issue may come from hardware of their V6 136 layer NAND from 2021 to 2022 and it runs hot. Though don't buy Gen3 anymore, if you are a causal user, choose this P31 or Gen 4: WD 850X/SK P41 can be much safer choice when there are deals. Even previous deals on Gen4 Seagate 520 is a much better choice than 980 PRO.

You would've known to hold off if you've taken business courses or had some basic knowledge on how business works.

The Law of Supply and Demand

High demand = Higher price
Low demand = Lower price

Basically, $190+ were rip-off prices that thrifty consumers would've avoided and patiently waited.

Early adopters pay more than late adopters but enjoy the same product sooner.

Meh price considering read speed and gen 3
Depending on what you're doing, you won't see any difference in gen 3 vs gen 4.

SSD speeds are weird. I have one of the most powerful gen 4 laptops around (Legion Pro 7, 13900HX, 32gb 5600 ram, P41 2tb), with top tier gen 4 SSDs and don't notice any difference on day to day or gaming, when comparing to my old 5800h, 32gb 3200 ram, P31 2tb…

It's like Windows can only move so fast. 🤷 ♂️

I don't disagree that the P31 is marginally more efficient from a MB/s per watt perspective, but unless you're actively copying files around NVME drives spend most of their time idle. How much of a difference in battery life is it actually making? Unless the idle power draw is significantly lower I can't see it mattering nearly as much as read/write speeds.

https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...eak%20load.

According to this article, P31 idle consumption is 348 mW while 980 pro is 749mW when ASPM/LPM disabled. I would say 46% less idle power consumer is pretty significant. Again, how much more battery life will not be a simple "XX min" more when compare to XX SSD. Based on the data show, I would say you will have "longer" usage time in general.

Alright I looked into idle power consumption for giggles and found that this has a 350 mW idle power consumption vs the EVO 980 Pro's 750 mW idle power consumption, a difference of 0.4W...enough to get a couple dozen minutes or so extra battery life out of a laptop, perhaps, with a light workload.

However, those numbers are with PCIe ASPM disabled. If that's enabled, then both this drive and the EVO 980 Pro drop to below 50 mW, with some reports being as low as 3-4 mW in a laptop configuration. At those power levels the backlight of your screen on minimum brightness completely swamps both out as far as relevance to battery life goes. Hell, the backlight on your keyboard probably will as well.

So yes, if you have your laptop on battery power and want to spend your whole time copying files, then the SK Hynix is the winner for battery life. For normal workloads, as in watching a movie or web browsing, you will not be able to measure a difference in battery life.

Although this may be a good product reviews of SK Hynix products say their warranty support is non existent.
I'm also concerned about this. Anyone here have experience with using their warranty?

Please add to specs: Warranty: 1200 TBW
This is what makes it better than many of the competitors.

This drive has benefits over a faster gen4 drive if you care about efficiency (heat and power usage) for example in a laptop. I personally would prefer a cooler, longer running SSD over something even twice as fast in sequential transfers as you wouldn't even see the performance delta in the vast majority of use cases.
