Don't need 2TB

Rather OT, I have the Crucial P3 4TB installed on one of the laptops as a secondary drive for bulk storage but doubt that I will ever purchase another. Even before getting the P3 near full, read/write performance (especially write) severely degrades under any type of a sustained load. It is not heat throttling, just the design. To its credit, the P3 runs relatively cool and is power efficient but really feel the compromises. Wish that SK Hynix would bring out a 4TB (or higher capacity) in either P31 or P41 single sided but may not be technically feasible at this time.
HOLD THE LIME, people!
I'd certainly like to save more money and want 4TB for $200, but I haven't seen that yet. I also have no way of knowing what the real bottom is, and I doubt even the companies know unless they've already planned a fire sale. I strongly doubt that you know either, so I wonder where you get your "secret knowledge" this will actually happen.
What people fail to understand is that these prices are NOT permanent. They are due to a temporary over supply and inventory clean out. When Gen 3 drives are gone, they won't be making more. Gen 4 drives will soon see the same fate. These (drives from a reputable mfg vs chinese junk) are not going to drop to nearly "free" as some people believe.
Since NVME/PCIe drives are backwards compatible, soon people who have a Gen 3 computer will be forced to buy Gen 5 (or later) because that's all that will be available. Caveat - if they come up with new, durable - as opposed to QLC shlt - memory technology that allows them to produce 2TB drives for peanuts, they will still cost about this much (+/-) because companies always want to maximize profits.
You don't see/hear much talk about Gen 5 products now, but the industry will not be so generous in the future when more platforms actually support it.
If you want verification look at the grossly over inflated hard drive prices (base tech around for 40+ years). We have to pay 1,000% markups on old tech that should be inexpensive, but the industry is owned by a few mfgs (a duopoly in reality) and they can gouge at will, so they do. Drives are overpriced and smaller sizes unavailable so people need to buy larger, more expensive drives.
I wish I was wrong, but I think this trend will continue, at least until SSD capacity expands significantly and by then you won't be able to buy a 2TB drive.
BTW - I bought this exact drive last September for $160 on sale, so this is almost a 40% decrease. I had no choice on waiting though.... c'est la vie
The Law of Supply and Demand
High demand = Higher price
Low demand = Lower price
Basically, $190+ were rip-off prices that thrifty consumers would've avoided and patiently waited.
Early adopters pay more than late adopters but enjoy the same product sooner.

Wow.... I don't know what school you went to, but if it's not too late I'd ask for my money back.
That's a rather overly simplistic and naive way of looking at it. Supply and demand are not always linear or rational, nor can you always link pricing directly to it in all cases. Is demand elastic, or inelastic? Depends on the product....
Memory is one of the most fraudulent and heavily manipulated markets, with artificial shortages created to drive up the price, even when supply is technically sufficient. Everyone knows what the sleazy mfgs are doing and we'll see it in nand again soon.
Early adopters - those who buy things right out of the gate - *almost* always pay more, but no one buying this drive last year was an "early adopter", and I'm speaking for myself when I paid $160 last September for a Gen 3 when Gen 4 SSDs were everywhere (For a gen 3 laptop that would supposedly run cooler with the P-31).
Gen 4 prices have collapsed too and Gen 5 is virtually invisible right now. Shouldn't Gen 4 still be expensive? No, because there's too much nand in general, and even Samsung's 990 Pro has been at the $140 (2TB) point and it's only a couple of months old. with that example, "Early adopters" were those who bought in the first 4-6 weeks of release, which is basically meaningless....

But yeah this model needs to drop a little lower to be competitive. And I really wish SK hynix and Samsung would start making 4TB's already. 2TB is not cutting it anymore for many people.
Anyways, I don't think it's a big deal. It doesn't require tons of research to see prices are cratering.
Thanks
