No need to soak them like the previous poster. Wipe them down with paper towels and it will effectively eliminate the smell. Mine had a greasy coating on them, which wiping down took off and with it the smell.

Sold and shipped by Amazon. I think these are the same ones sold at Walmart. I snagged a 160 lb set few months back and I love them.
They shipped each plate individually. The package was destroyed on some plates but my plates were unharmed. They came in with a strong plastic smell. I put them in my bath tub with soap/water/vinegar for 2 days. That eliminated 90% of the smell. After 1-2 weeks the smell is pretty gone.
I tried to dry one of the plates with a towel after washing and the writing came off, so let them dry naturally then wipe the soap with paper towel or something.
But as a weight set, they are great. I don't do Olympics lifts, the most stress they go through is likely during my deadlift and they feel solid. Definitely don't use the 10s on their own. If you're just starting or warming up and need to deadlift 65, put the j-hooks on the lowest position in your rack.

If you look on slickdeals separately for a 7ft / Olympic bar, might be better price elsewhere for the bar itself. You'll also need clamps on the ends of the bar. Those are cheap on Amazon [keep in mind, the normal bar is 45lbs and there are smaller lighter ones, usually considered 'ladies' bar. 2inch diameter also is what youre looking for. ]
If you're a casual user with no dedicated need (e.g., crossfitters usually need bearings, powerlifters need 29mm, etc.) then there is no better spec'd barbell out there than the Tru Grit one. This is coming from a guy who owns a multitude of high end gym equipment. $99 shipped is truly a slick deal.

Could someone please recommend a simple but good weight bench for someone getting started with this set from scratch? Thanks.

I'm thinking about this [amazon.com] $110 one for simple benchpressing and leg attachment.

That is an awful bench and I can almost guarantee is unsafe. I highly recommend a cage with safeties, especially if you lift alone. You can find deals on power cages every so often here on SD and will be light years (no an exaggeration) better than the one you posted.

I've literally failed with 350lbs on the bar and thank God I had a solid safety system because I'm being dead serious when I say i wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for that.

Get powerblocks, dumbbells are not as harsh on the shoulders.
I use bowflex bench since i can store it upright to declutter when not in use.

Hi, would this be comparable? Or is the one you posted better quality? I am new to buying weights and bars, but my son is interested in starting out

Hi, the one I posted is much better than the one you posted and only $20 more. If you want specific details, the grip diameter is more sensible at 28mm (vs. 30mm) and that is due to the better quality steel. Bad quality steel needs to be thicker in order to maintain the same durability, whereas good quality steel will display the same or better physical properties at a smaller diameter. Aside from that, the coating, bearings and 1 year warranty is better on the Tru Grit bar.

If you want to cut down (and take advantage of my many many hours of research on home gym equipment) your research time, you can feel very confident in buying the Tru Grit barbell and any of the various Walmart bumper deals as a starting weight set. Weights that are shipped to your door for $1/lb all in is perfect (compared to $1.5-2.5lb) of premium sets.

lastly, you will need barbell clips. These are great starter ones: https://www.amazon.com/Clout-Fitness-Release-Locking-Training/dp/B07RGVXCT5/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=1OP... [amazon.com]

I'm confused. Not one option on that link is cheaper than the prices listed in the original post.
