I have all three compatible remotes: the "shitty" RC-N1 controller in this kit, the "upgraded" DJI RC controller with the built-in screen, and the $1199 RC Pro controller. There are obviously pros/cons for each, but the RC-N1 with a decent smartphone or tablet is the best of the bunch IMO because it offers the best battery life, range, speed and versatility. I also think the in-hand feel/comfort and control precision due to hand position with the N1 is better than the other two remotes. I either fly the N1 with an 11" iPad Pro on a tablet mount or my S23U in the stock holder and going back to the any of the screen remotes - even the Pro - always feels like a downgrade in viewing and flying experience. Plus there's basically no third party app support for DroneDeploy so they're useless for any of photogrammetry, mapping or any other automated flight use.

You nailed it - especially with the cripple hammer comment.

This isn't correct. A drone weighing more than 249g by itself or with accessories at takeoff only means you need to pay the $5 FAA registration fee online. You pay the fee, label your drone(s) with your recreational reg number you get and then go on with your life. One registration covers all of your recreational use drones and then lets you add accessories like prop guards, landing gear extensions, gimbal protectors, strobes, payload releases, etc. You only need a Part 107 "license" (certificate) if you're using it for non-recreational purposes and if you're doing that you need to register each drone individually with a separate reg ID # regardless of weight. This 249g no-reg thing is just a marketing ploy that actually introduces huge limitations to actually enjoying the drone.

No, that's not how any of this works.

They're using Mavic 3s for the extra payload capacity and range, not Mini Pros.

Correct.

Also, PSA: the high capacity batteries push the weight above 250 g meaning you must be a licensed drone pilot to fly it, and even then that imposes extra restrictions about flying near / above people.

So, not having high capacity batteries isn't necessarily a bad thing depending on your situation.

Definitely not, this looks like a special combo for Costco that includes extra batteries and charger.

If it was that, this would be a smoking hot deal and I'd be in for a cancellation.

Thanks OP. solid drone.
Plenty flight time with the 3 regular batteries,

Lacking bags?:
Any padded bag will do. I am using a old small SLR camera bag.

Lacking Props?
A pack of props is $10 at Dji. There are knock off ones cheaper. I had both. the Dji ones were more stable than my knock-offs.
Use a correct size screw driver and apply presure to not strip the small prop screws.

I HIGHLY recommend getting the B4UFLY and UAV Forecast Apps on your phone.

Counterpoint, I wish I had waited and got the controller without the screen. Side loading apps like Litchi and drone deploy; not having to mod to get good range with an external antenna; choosing a big screen when flying with other people or wanting a better preview for stills; easy screen mirroring; full resolution screen recording are some of the advantages.

The RC is nice but DJI gave it a gentle whack with the cripple hammer. Otoh, setup is faster and it is less fiddly with fewer cables. JMO.
Another vote for the old controller with the screen of your size.

Thanks for the perspective, I was thinking the RC screen would be nice, but using an ipad would be nice for groups (my kids). I do see the some used controllers on ebay for around $200ish, so not the worst. I also have a bunch of apache HF hard cases I can use for everything. I might jump on this.

With the extra capacity batteries you do.

I think you are confusing registering your drone for $5 with being a registered drone pilot. The former is all you need, according to the FAA:

It means you have to register the drone if you fly it in the configuration. If one is flying recreationally in the U.S. they can fly a drone weighing up to 55 lbs as long as it is flown within the required speed and height limits and is flown in uncontrolled (Class G) airspace.

Sorry about the dumb question, but what kind of purchase protection is preferred? I take it that Costco Citi card offers nothing extra. Is the DJI care the preferred way? I have a feeling that I would crash it.

From my point of view the only reason to own a mini 3 pro over air 2s is the extended fly time with the beefy battery. The camera on the 3 is unambiguously inferior under difficult light conditions (before you flame me please read the previous three words three times and make sure you understand what they mean 😀) and the under 250g is pointless since many jurisdictions require you to register even a sub 250g drone if it has a camera.

Unlike other posters I prefer the screen less controller since my phone has a much better screen and I carry my phone anyway.

Not flaming but the price of the air 2s seem to be starting at around 869 and fly more closer to 1200. It seems to be a better drone at a different price point. The bigger sensor is probably the main reason it's better for low light. Is night drone flying one of the better reasons to have it? I haven't really imagined I would use it at night for the fear of losing it in the dark.

If you aren't taking video, the photo quality will be negligible for 99.5% of users. For video what you are saying makes sense, but how often are you flying before/after golden hour? The mini 3 pro is also going to be quieter and less intrusive when flying near people.

But my understanding is that you still have to at least do the TRUST certification training and exam. Unless it's <250 g then it's a "toy". And part of that certification is teaching you that > 250 g can't be used anywhere above people (such as a park, or neighborhood, or beach) without special prior authorization. So unless you're going into the wilderness, keeping it less than <250 g can be an advantage. (Maybe I'm mistaken?)

Update: I keep saying 55g. I meant <.55 lb or 250 g.

Thanks for the clarification. TRUST required of all recreational drone flyers in the US no matter of the drone. (or weight, as long as it is under 55lbs, it's all drones even those under 250g)

It's free, online, and one is supposed to have the certificate with them. It's not a license.

Of note, even if someone is Part 107 licensed and they want to just fly recreationally and not 'under' their license for the flight, then they also need TRUST. (It's subtle but can come up. )
