This depends entirely on 1) if NVIDIA and competitors continue overpricing similarly in future generations, and 2) how big of a "leap" the next gen is.

We already "know" (ish) the next gen isn't coming out until late 2024 or in 2025.

That being said, I plan to use this until it is obsolete, and then I almost always keep one as a backup because I'm paranoid, so the whole "resale value" doesn't mean much to me.

It's even worse, considering the 4080 should've been a lower tiered card if going by last generation. The 4080 uses the AD103 die. The 3080 used the GA102 die (the same die as the 3090 and 3090ti). The 103 die from last generation (GA103) was developed for the 3080ti laptop GPU. It ended up being repurposed later in the generation as a variation of the 3060ti. It could've been used for the 3070 or 3070ti with more unlocked shades, but I assume they didn't have enough effective dies for that (Samsung 8nm node for the 30 series had very low yields with a lot of defective units). Nvidia's fabrication cost is based on die size and the die in the 4080 is smaller than the 4060 die. On top of that, Jenson Huang (Nvidia CEO) has stated in a shareholder meeting that they're seeing the highest profits in the history of the company with consumer 40 series cards. That's with the huge jump in price of TSMC going from Samsung's 8nm (they got a massive discount from Samsung due to the low yields) and the lowest sales figures in over a decade. So, they're selling less of the 40 series consumer GPU's than they have of any previous generation in the past decade, yet they're making more profits from these GPU's than any prior generation. This generation is INCREDIBLY overpriced. $1,000 for this GPU is still WAY too high.

This is a pretty naive comment. CPUs we're over priced 18 months ago and have dropped 60% in price.

I probably should have kept my 3080 12g and called it a day. I saw reviews saying this 4070 ti was quite a bit quieter ans a bit faster and I had a deal to save $120 on an already discounted card, so i sold my other one for a loss and got the new one, while losing only slightly in the exchange. But then I found out there are some areas the 4070 ti are worse than the 3080 in...

In 18 months the 5XXX series will be out and everything on the market now will be cheaper. Things get cheaper overtime - that doesn't invalidate what I was implying which is that these won't drop significantly below $900-1000 (if at all) before the next generation releases.

Tell that to everything that is more expensive to buy nowadays. Since when does the price of last gen GPU have to be the price of the new gen GPU? Why not go back to 2080 or further? Sure it's overpriced, I get it. You can say that and I would be okay with it. What I'm a bit annoyed is this sense of entitlement by some people, where they think the price should be whatever fits their budget. I feel for you when you are looking for a new car these days. You will be in for a shock at the sticker price.
