I just signed up for norton 360 about 5 weeks ago, yes they make you click on an option for auto renewal , but right after your account is setup, you can go in and turn it off.

they also email you about 1 week before the auto renewal to remind you that you are going to be renewed. Last year I forgot to turn off the auto renewal, and you have 48 hours after it is renewed to cancel for a full refund.

so, yes, it is sort of annoying and a bit of a trap, but you also have quite a few ways out of the trap.

( obviously all of this might change at any time in the near or far future )

Because you never make mistakes or have children using your PCs?

My brother has 3 kids (now all either just out of college or finishing up) and they constantly over the years have gotten viruses I have had to clean up on their PCs for them. Windows built in product simply does not catch everything or do as good a job as some of the other products in my experience. I install Norton for them and they almost never renew\someone forgets to renew and the cycle repeats and this has been going on for awhile. One now has a fiancee that is supposed to be a computer tech with a CS degree, and her PC gets infected and he has no idea how to go about fixing it (says something about the current state of college CS grads).

Everyone can make a mistake (even the most season IT pro), some people are clueless on PCs and kids are particularly bad at clicking on all the nonsense that is spewed to them on various websites and by their brain dead classmates following garbage on social media. The 2-3 dollars a PC per year for some decent AV and security software is worth it imo.

Most viruses that get into computers are explicitly allowed by the end user by clicking something they shouldn't be. Microsoft Defender is more than sufficient for virus protection since 10, and having 3rd party can sometimes make it worse. Configure Defender and install Ublock Origin and NoScript browser extensions and you're safe from 99% of threats. Practice safe browsing and not allowing executables you don't trust explicitly and you'll never see an infection.

And make sure you have a backup strategy for your files so if something does happen you don't lose everything

Might be worth it just for the VPN. One year of their VPN for $20 on use for up to ten devices? Interesting.

I would say to anybody to take this with a grain of salt. This was not the case for me, I've got the receipts to prove it. I'm sure the process was changed, or has change, and will change. I just looked through all my Norton emails and this was the shady notifications.

On 08/11/2022 I got and automatic renewal notification. It listed my subscription renewal date of 10/15/2022 with the renewal price and specifically highlighted that I will be charged on 09/10/2022, a month before the subscription was due to expire.

Needless to say, I didn't realize and when I actually got charged for it I was in the middle of my vacation so no time to call and complain. They won this round.

Yes, Norton is crap. But I only use it for parental controls as it syncs across all devices.

The renewal cost on these are not cheap at $100 a year after this first year. Looks like the limit is three.

We able to renew year after year with each of the three we can by?

WARNING! Norton requires signing up for auto-updates to activate any codes you might buy. You WILL have to provide a way for them to charge you after a year before they will activate your first year of coverage.

YOU CAN REMOVE IT AFTER, but you have to remember to cancel the auto-renew information so they cannot charge you full price automatically next year.

At least that's how its worked in the part.

Edit: Even the listing says "with Autorenew" to make it clear its set up this way.
Ditched Norton after they required a credit card to activate a product that is already paid. Thanks for the ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️.

I got charged when I forgot to cancel auto renew, I didn't even realize it until I seen the charge on my credit card bill a week later. Anyways I simply chatted with there CS and told them paying $104 for any anti virus was crazy, especially when I could get the same software from amazon or any other place for $15-$25 and she simply refunded me my money. I had told her if I would of also got an email letting me know my subscription was about to end then I would of knew to cancel, she was very nice. Anyways either cancel the minute you use the code or usually whenever you are about to cancel they will offer you an extra 30 days if you don't cancel so get that deal and wait another 30 days until they add the extra 30 days to your account then you can cancel the auto renew. I know some companies they make it hard for you to even remove your credit card and if that ever happens just simply hit up your credit card company report your cc loss and have them 2 day ship you a new cc lol problemed solved

You can cancel the auto renew at any time after signing up. Also use a virtual CC and lock it to prevent being charged. I do this via Capitalone and there are other CC that offer this type virtual card.
Also you can use https://privacy.com/ if your CC does not offer a virtual card.

Lastly, I've bought these several times the last few years and just chatted with the support agent to get the subscription added on/extending my existing expiration date.

Your story isn't change anything all have said. You did not cancel auto renew until you are close to auto renew date. You reply to a post that clearly says to cancel "right after" signups, in fact you can do this months later, as long as before the fine print specified advanced auto renew date.
The ability to cancel auto renew won't change, as disable it is simply illegal. You subscribe to a service and cannot cancel without penalty for a lifetime?

Totally unacceptable on Norton's part. Agree with the comment above that Norton is the malware.

You get what you pay for. Most VPNs are not safe - do some googling on this and you'll find out the problems.
