The Paperwhite, having more space to read, with better illumination makes for a better experience when you get down to reading. The waterproofing adds peace of mind that you won't ruin your precious Kindle too. About the only downside of the Paperwhite is that the seamless front means it's a little less distinct when turning pages. The Kindle can lag when changing pages and does not have a display temperature adjustment for warm lighting (night reading). Best budget option is the Kindle, but for a few more bucks, just get the new Paperwhite if you will be bringing it around with you.
Bonus round: For $105, you can get the Kids version and set it up as an adult. It comes with free books subscription, extended warranty and an included case with limited color options.
