They're different interfaces. Also, the MX500 should be TLC. The P3 is definitely QLC.

Quote from tanknart :
The 4TB version of the MX500 is QLC while 2TB and below are still TLC. Someone on a past mx500 sale mentioned one of the hardware review sites listed it as such, but I can't remember which site.
This may not be correct. As far as I'm aware, there were unsubstantiated rumors of a QLC variant of the MX500, which were traced back to drives purchased from an untrustworthy source (known for counterfeits). I have not seen any compelling evidence of a legitimate QLC variant of the MX500. That's not to say that it couldn't happen.

Any reason to get this over the 870 EVO that's $170 other than saving $5?
The 870 EVO has been plagued with reliability problems. They may or may not have been resolved. I believe there's a new hardware variant but I've only heard of it selling at 1TB, so far.

Lol the 870 Evo is one of the most reliable drives on the market. "Plagued with reliability problems" is maybe the biggest stretch I've ever heard.

The 870 Evo is a better drive than this for the same price. And if you have an open m.2 slot, get the P3 plus first. Then the Evo. Then this if they're both gone.

Exactly. I can drop 6 of these into my PC and still have 2 nvme slots left for use cases requiring more speed. I happily boot from SATA SSD on many things and never even notice a difference unless I break out a stopwatch. The revolutionary improvements were going from spinning rust to SSD, not from SATA to nvme.

Load times in modern games are noticeably faster, even when upgrading gens on NVME. I checked recently and my newest SSD is about 10x faster in real-world benchmarks compared to my first Sata SSD. The gains are there, especially with the right use cases.

The answer is, write endurance. If you spend few mins on google you can verify these numbers.

Write Endurance Samsung 870 EVO 4TB Specification - 2400 TB
Write Endurance Crucial MX500 4TB Specification - 1000 TB

870 EVO is much better choice simple due to write endurance. You have 2.4 times as much drive durability. It should be no brainer to go with 870 EVO imo, especially considering samsung makes premium drives.

If you're planning to use it in an Unraid based setup, avoid that.

Also the EVO has 4gb ram vs I believe 512mb on this drive.

I am looking to make a NAS with RAID 1 configuration, would these SSDs be a good choice? I'd buy 4 of these to effectively have 8TB of space. Since this is mainly a cold storage solution, I'm not sure if this SSD would provide much advantage over an HDD. Any recs for HDDs if so?

No, Samsung will cover 2.4 times the writes under warranty. The TBW numbers are NOT a good indicator of actual drive longevity. Additionally, few people will come anywhere near those numbers during the drive's useful lifespan.

Here's [techpowerup.com] a single 700 post thread on "the most reliable drive on the market" and it's not the only one.

On paper, the 870 EVO is a slightly better drive. In practice, the difference will likely be imperceptible.

The P3 Plus is a totally different beast. It's NVMe, QLC, and DRAM-less (but has HMB). While it has much higher peaks, once the pSLC cache is full, even the MX500 will likely appreciably outpace it.
