Upgrading from 3700x and amd rx480… going with 5900x for cpu at $274. Not budget friendly but tired to chase down used items…
Update: bought it. I decided based on "not overthinking". SD guidebook rule #1: When in doubt, buy it out. Sort it out [later].

Been with Nvidia for a while now, never owned an AMD but I only use AMD CPU's and love them!
What will be different? Honestly ray tracing is something I will not use now so that is not really a concern. I am a casual gamer, mostly play older, adventure type games and RPG, getting into racing. Never play competitive games
I have a 2070 Super and R5 3600 and planned on upgrade in 12-18 month but some of these AMD GPU priced have me intrigues to say the least

AM4 and upgrading to 5800X3D (from R5 3600 + RX 580), would this be a good upgrade or should I go for the 6950 XT?
My goal is to improve PCVR performance so I can play HL: Alyx at a higher setting.

Anyone have any thoughts or speculation on what prices will look like in the coming months? Something tells me we still haven't seen rock-bottom pricing on the 6000 series GPUs yet, but I could be wrong.

China has unfortunately made rare earth metal hard to get so.. price may go up. At this point in time the 6800 xt is the card with value and u should have no regrets if price drops in a year. Honestly $480 vs $570 is a lot! $480 vs $300 was a big jump.. adding $90 on top of that makes it less desirable. Law of diminishing return for p2p ratio. The gains are nominal.
5800X3D is also a great choice. I picked 5900X bc my focus was on productivity not gaming. I like to game casually.
