The PH1400 head won't be compatible with the next generation of attachments. The PH1420 now has electrical contacts to drive Powerhead/LinqIQ/LEDs and so on. If the PH1400 was deeply discounted enough: Maybe, but this ain't that.

I can only speak to the combo, but I've had this set for a couple of years now and have been very pleased. I had a gas powered Echo combo set previously and the functionality is very similar to swapping between attachments.

I own this set and it works fantastic. The lawn edger performs better than I expected. Also, I added the tiller accessory last year and that thing works pretty well for working in the garden and chopping up sod.

The only downside is that the trimmer does not have the newest auto-wind head on it for easy loading of the string, which would be on the stand alone trimmer tool.

Go for it. Just the battery alone is worth a couple of hundred dollars.

I have the standalone trimmer, hedge trimmer & chainsaw.

Really wish eGo made a standalone tiller; it's the only tool I need, don't want to buy into a multihead thing just for that.

I just returned mine I bought a couple of weeks ago. The edger could not develop enough torque to overcome the soil/grass. I would have to start the edger blade and then slowly put it in the dirt. Must have steady hands. The trimmer on the other hand worked great.

Also, I missed the simplicity of gas. I ended up needing it away from my house and the battery died. Bringing a gas can is easier than bringing a charger and waiting for it to charge IMO.

This is a great price though.

I am very conflicted on this. I am in the EGO ecosystem with a mower and standalone trimmer, and 4 batteries (7, 5, 2x 2.5). I don't need the multi-head system or battery, but always looking to expand and get additional batteries at a discount. Any other strong opinions for or against the PH1400 head vs. PH1420?

I've used the multihead system as my primary trimmer in my lawn care business for about 4 years now. I love it. I'd say my favorite thing about it is the trigger gives me a bit more control of the spin speed of the head for whatever reason. On the downside I think it is slightly heavier than other Ego trimmers. The multihead also seems to have more power, and it's possible (although a bit of a pain) to modify the head to add a metal brush cutting blade. Add to that the flexibility to add other tools (of which I have several and all work excellent), I do recommend this for this price.

Have this and several other attachments for the multi-head like tiller, broom, pole saw. Sold off my ego standalones. Love the multi-head system!
