This fridge requires a WXFE filter which needs to be replaced every few months at a cost of more than $50. It will not accept generic filter replacements. This is enforced with a sensor in the fridge that reads a unique RFID tag embedded in the label of each genuine WXFE filter. So factor that into your decision.

Can just get the bypass plug and use an inline filter like this.

which is going to be cheaper and better overall

The price isn't bad but too bad about the proprietary filter that apparently doesn't allow for generic brands that Herb mentioned above.

All these new refrigerators are terrible, good thing mine is still going strong after 45 years
That's nothing.

Mine's been going strong since I bought it during WW2.

How do you know they're terrible if you haven't had one?

Use an external filter that sits outside the fridge.

These are cheaper and last longer. I change mine once a year and do not bother with the internal fridge filter.

Ohh wow such a great opportunity to trick the sensor, worth a project.Probable lot of people paying $50 for it, I'll make a solution for $10 and it'll last longer.

These are cheap and easier. They use the John Guest fitting as a quick connect. This could probably just hook in-line on the current fridge line on the back. Not sure how the GE fridges are made these days, but for years, they ran the line on the outside with a piece of tape.

Sold, delivered and installed appliances for years. The repairmen said GE stands for "Gets Expensive". "Buy it if you want to, that's how I make my money." Had a control board go out on a new floor model french door slate fridge. Less than 6 months old, $3,500 fridge. The more basic, the better. Stay away from Frigidaire, Samsung and LG. Most fridges are crappy, especially if they have special electronics and moving parts. I'd recommend the warranty.

Sold my mom a Kenmore made by Whirlpool, slim ice maker and LED lights went out, would have cost more than the fridge to replace.

There are YouTube videos on this project. You cut the plastic off of the bypass with the rf tag and then tape that in place where the sensor is and you can use generic. Did this for my parents took 20 mins.

I cut off the RFID and taped it to a generic filter from Amazon. Works great and saves 40 per
