  • Originally published in 1985, Neil Postman's groundbreaking polemic about the corrosive effects of television on our politics and public discourse has been hailed as a twenty-first-century book published in the twentieth century. Now, with television joined by more sophisticated electronic media—from the Internet to cell phones to DVDs—it has taken on even greater significance. Amusing Ourselves to Death is a prophetic look at what happens when politics, journalism, education, and even religion become subject to the demands of entertainment. It is also a blueprint for regaining control of our media, so that they can serve our highest goals.

What happens when media and politics become forms of entertainment? As our world begins to look more and more like Orwell's 1984, Neil's Postman's essential guide to the modern media is more relevant than ever.

"It's unlikely that Trump has ever read Amusing Ourselves to Death, but his ascent would not have surprised Postman." -CNN

The writing is fun and engaging. The audiobook is really good too.
IMHO this book is a must-read for all American adults.
I am pretty sure "King of Boom" was being sarcastic

Was required reading for a college class, ended up going to see Postman give a talk about the book. Definitely worth a read if you get a chance.

So much for no political "discussions" on SD.

There isn't a monopoly on truth, nor is there a black and white "good and evil". I just don't understand the ones that are loudest about personal liberties being sacrosanct are the ones that typically delight in when someone else's are removed.
I'm sending a PM if you want to discuss this further. Suffice to say I take exception with many of the comments here, but this isn't the place on this forum site to continue political discussions that are entirely divorced from the merits of the deal itself.

Worth reading but I'm afraid $2 is too much. Required reading for a class, but I didn't like the book.

I never understood why the thinks longform media should be the standard. He didn't grasp the idea that media are businesses.

For a conceptual musical album version look for Roger Waters' "Amused to Death", especially if you are into Pink Floyd.*

* I am aware he is controversial right now.

It's puzzling to me why people think he's controversial right now - Pink Floyd sold hundreds of millions of records with songs purely about controversial topics - I guess people just want to be offended now and can only take sound bites and art out of context in order to fit their negative and narrow view of life

The classic songs are still great. The man himself, at least as presented on stage, has what can charitably be described as an unsophisticated set of political views (or thinks his audience is so stoned that he has to dumb things down to a 6th grade level). Whether you agree with his politics or not, it gets pretty tedious.

But like I said, the classic songs are still great.
