I wouldn't recommend buying this style. They look like my grandpa's spade bits, no self-feeding tip, no curved blades for chip clearing. No thanks.

Here's an example of a much better choice with a few less bits, but almost half the price.

Thanks for the comparison.
However, self feeding tips are not always better.
In some applications, they are far too aggressive of a feed rate.
Sometime you want to go slow...

I'd get these, or something similar, as a bigger set is more likely to have the size you need and it can get expensive if you have to buy individual bits to fill in what's missing.

And really the only advantage of the self feeding ones is that they punch holes through studs faster.

Whatever you do, don't leave your drill/driver laying around with one of these in it and forget about it. Ended up with the 1/4" spade bit buried in my calf a month ago

If you ever find yourself drilling holes in studs or headers for electrical or plumbing, these are NOT the spade bits for you. Self-feeding for the win. With this style, so much swearing. And I've lost 3 of these down various walls until I got the Dewalt extension bit that locks onto the drill bit (not the magnet only one - the good one has a black release band).

Anyhow, if you're looking to make a nice looking 1" hole you're probably gonna use a small hole saw instead of this meat grinder set.

I agree with this statement, except would rather recommend a slightly different product - Irwin Speedbor. My spades are collecting dust after buying it.

Thanks for the suggestion. One question - for drilling through thicker wood (4x4 for example) do you have any trouble with the bits getting hung up or being difficult to remove? I've seen this type before and that was my main concern.

Edit: Looking again, I suspect that's why they make them so short, and specifically state they're best use for holes <2in deep.

I don't disagree, but spade bits are made for quick and dirty work. If you want a smooth hole or careful drilling I'd use another tool like a Forstner bit. For the type of work usually done with spade bits, you want self feeding for sure.

Sorry for the late reply (just noticed your question) - no issues drilling 4x4. You may want to pull it out a couple of times to release the sawdust, but they don't really get stuck (unless you hit a nail, but this is completely different story)
