Prior to cell phones, this was the thing to have in high school. We created some really cool text/decision based RPGs, and playing Drug Wars/Dope Wars was an incredible way to pass the time in study hall.

I don't think I ever actually calculated anything on this calculator, now that I think about it.

Unless you're really on a budget, I'd wait for the inevitable sale on an 84 CE. It's a far newer calculator and a far better experience. The 83 series is so old that I'm surprised it's still being sold new. As a math teacher, there have been times when students with an 83 have to deal with very slow operating speeds, such as with heavy use of simulations of random numbers. It's also nice to be able to graph different functions in different colors at the same time. Plus the 83 is not rechargeable, it's thicker, it has a non-color, lower resolution screen, less RAM, etc.

You're spot on. The 83+ came out in 1999

Intel was trying to pull a TI with their dual-core laptop CPUs until AMD forced their hand.

Someone needs to open source an OS that has the same UI flow as TI so that it can run on other brand calcs...

Honestly the price on this is insane. The potato I had with dinner last night had more processing power than this thing. Teachers need to stop recommending/requiring these things.

Is the reason these are still mandatory or standard cause everyone knows how to use them ?

Unless you need it for a test. Just run an emulator on your phone, or get the TI 84 or better. Imagine what the cost of making these is for TI these days? Must be like $5. all the R&D was paid for years ago.

I'm pretty sure the only reason that the ti 83/84 series is still in use is because of standardized testing. College Board doesn't want kids pulling out other models and potentially cheating.

It's such a dumb reason when everyone already carries super powerful computers in their pockets already. I can't believe ti is getting away with this robbery still
