why are these still not 99 cents yet at your local dollar store. I bought mine for this price 24 years ago?

TI doesn't have enough competition maybe. 100 years ago when I was in college you had to buy an HP scientific calculator. It was $300 in 1989.

More like TI hasn't had any competition in decades. However, you brought up a great example. I, too, had the one semester of a slog through RPN as a result of one professor mandating an HP rather than a TI in the Calculus series in a time before smart phones.

I do believe finance/accounting may still be a holdout where HP still manages to hold some cachet...?

Good luck!

And it was probably also the exact same model with the same features... which is why I've previously posted that the primary avenue for anyone shopping these should first be the used market. Most mainline TI calculator models/features haven't changed in many years.

However, buyers scouring the used market would benefit from timing the market (so catching students dumping their calculators near the end of a semester). As such, these end of summer discounts can be helpful for buyers who've been holding out and/or perhaps live in competitive markets for used calculators.

I would note that these battery-based models are my recommended choice for testing since you could always bring a spare set of AAA along just in case. To my knowledge, if you don't mind the lack of a nicer presentation mode (for fractions, for example) and never plan on connecting your calculator to a computer the TI-83 Plus is functionally the same as the better known TI-84 models. Of course, whether your high school teacher is as understanding about substitution is a different problem...

About the only whiz-bang feature in the 84 series was the recent release of models with a Python interpreter. Otherwise, models in the 84 range are really only distinguished by the availability of color screens and/or rechargeable batteries.

Good luck!

It is simple. TI got integrated into textbooks, and hence, they pushed out competition. As the books show you how to do it on TI. Most people don't have time to learn a graphing calc, then the time to teach their kids to use a different calculator. Guilty, I just bought TI for my kid for this reason. I know how different calcs work. Used HP, Casio, Sharp in college never used a TI. Just easier and faster for me.

GOAT HP48GX!!! RIP.

Yeah. Try saying that to the high school math teacher.
