I got in with the orginal deal without any issues. There was a lot of misinformation in the orginal thread, but yes, all you have to do it just activate the phone with the fi app, then take the Fi SIM out and never touch it again (sock drawer it, trash it, etc). You can pop in a SIM from another carrier with no problem. After 120 days have passed you can verify that it's finalized in your fi account > savings > earned. At that point you can do whatever you want, the discount is yours to keep.

I think a significant difference here is we are not getting the storage upgrade for free? I got this deal last time but got the s23 ultra with 512gb for the same price as they are offering the 256gb.

Well crap, I'm not seeing the "120d counter", I'm seeing "billing cycle ends in 29 days". Maybe I jumped the gun by ordering before the bill came.
Have you activated your S23 phone yet? If yes, did it ask to transfer service from the BYOP SIM to the S23?

Yes, I did. On 7/27, I signed up for Fi with a BYOD, service was activated, and ordered the S23. When I received the S23, I used the Fi app to transfer service from the BYOD. I didn't receive billing until 8/2, so I may have not gotten credit for having Fi service in the accounting system.

If your S23 was activated with a service transfer from the BYOP SIM, then you should be OK. I don't use the Fi app to keep track of things. Log into your Fi account using a computer, go to Billing-->Fi Savings-->Click on the In Progress column and see if there's a checklist and a countdown. It should look like the attachment below.

What does Google Fi charge (for device purchase) code as?
Internet search results: Google Fi payments are categorized as "Business Services - Internet Services"
Is this what everyone see?

As far as I can tell, the monthly charge is categozied as "Internet Services", but the phone purchase is categorized as "Equipment" or "Merchandise". I checked my transactions but couldn't find the numeric code. Attached are some screenshots for you.

The phones are shipped from Google store and charges as such. I used a card for purchase once which would have 5% cash back for phone bills but didn't get it for the device purchase as it was done from Google store.

Thanks, I'll try those steps.

Based on the comments on this topic I understand that I can use the phone on any other SIM card as the phone comes unlocked, just that I have to ensure that the google fi SIM card is not used on any other phone.
But at the end of 120 days counter, do I have to put the FI SIM card back into the s23 phone for anything? or I can just discontinue my service and discard the FI SIM card?

Can some one confirm..
After getting the phone, power it up, open Google Fi app to activate the phone and start the 120-day clock.
After that you can take the Fi SIM card out but do not use it on any other phones. No need to put the Fi SIM card back in after 120 days. You are done.
You can now use the phone with any SIM card without any problem with Google.
Source: I did this last year with the S22 trade-in deal.

My Google Fi account is in limbo. I was in on the old deal from last December, paused my account and then canceled with $160 excess credit left in the account. They ended up refunding me $15. I went to my account a few weeks ago and testing it out I went through the reactivate process but did not complete it and now my account is stuck in sign up account. I can't view my account info or credits. Every time go back to page it goes to welcome, then to choose a plan

When did you cancel your previous Fi account? If it's more than 180 days ago, there's no real benefit of trying to resurrect it to do this deal. Your $160 Fi credit was gone when the account was cancelled. Might as well start a new account and go the BYOP SIM route.

My acct was canceled on June 3. My billing stmts are on the 10th. I want to see what happens on the 10th this month if I get any more refund. Then I might activate the same account to get out of the stuck sign up screen and immediately pause or cancel it. But if I have $150 or so in credit, I can activate it and not pay any service for the 4 months.

I have tried contacting customer service - they suck , but the rep said she could escalate to see if the credit could get transferred to the Google Store, but not sure how I would use that credit . Seems like you can only buy Pixel phones from the store. I told her I am going to wait to the 10th and see if there is any more processing so nothing was escalated yet.

I cancelled a few Fi accounts and was quite disappointed with the refund. I only got back a few dollars of credit for the unused days of the last billing period. I knew that the unused Fi referral credit would be forfeited, but I was sort of expecting the unused trade-in credits to be refunded, but got nothing. Some of my Fi account had as much as $35 in unused trade-in credit.
