Of the various G14 models, which one is "the one" and why?
The 2022 g14 with 6700s seems to be the favorite with good performance at a good price. This 2022 model with 6800s performs better but it does get a bit hotter, which is why most people go for the 6700s instead.
The 2021 model is cheaper, but it has no webcam, And the 2023 models are just too expensive to be worth it right now unless you need a nvidia gpu.

Bought one of these back when they had an open box excellent, on sale for $824 super good deal sold out fast. Laptop runs really really hot but that's to be expected from a small thin laptop with these specs. Undervolted it and was able to get some pretty good performance out of it but either way it still gets hot. Just something to note.

As already stated the 6700S is the preferred model due to minimal loss to performance for cheaper and better stock temperatures.
The 6800S model is easily the 2nd best choice though and if you are comfortable with adjusting the settings to either undervolt or lower performance it is an excellent option. If you aren't wanting to mess with any settings then the 6700S model would be the better choice for you.
If you want a 6800 without needing to mess with settings then the Lenovo Legion options at 16" are viewed as the best option as they don't suffer the same default heat issues as the smaller G14 but they of course are also 2" larger so it depends how important the form factor is to you.

The lower end 2023 models when on sale. No contest. They have a far superior Ryzen CPU, more future-proof GPUs, overall better performance, no thermal overheating problems, and have been on sale the past month for $1399 (4060) and $1599 (4070). Why not spend an extra couple hundred bucks?!

I love these machines, and this model in particular is quite good.. But I personally think Asus has been hitting the Mary-Jane a bit too much if they think this machine with last-generation parts is worth this much. This is just-under the pricing of some RTX 4070 laptops, and over the pricing of some RTX 4060 laptops, and I don't honestly recommend taking a 6800S over either of those GPU's.
No-offense to AMD, but they're quite a bit behind Nvidia for productivity. This machine really does have the potential to be a direct-macbook-competitor, but without an Nvidia GPU it just isn't competitive enough. And for this price you just aren't getting enough features -not even USB-C 4.0 or Thunderbolt, which also means no external GPU support.
Asus, let's shave a couple hundred more buckerinos off these things. Let's be real.

Same I also bought an open-box certified for 900 back in march.
Very good laptop. Very long battery life when undervolted.
