  • About this Store:
  • Additional Information:
    • The Solidigm Gen4 SSD is rated 4.7 out of 5 stars on Amazon based on over 135 customer reviews.
    • Based on our research, past 2TB NVMe Gen3 drives have sold for around $65, while past 2TB NVMe Gen4 drives have sold in a range from $80 up to $120.
    • Some variables to consider when purchasing an SSD drive include: Gen3 versus Gen4, whether the SSDs cells are SLC/MLC/TLC/QLC, DRAM vs DRAMless, and the more commonly seen specs such as sustained read/write speeds, and TBW (terabytes written lifespan), closely related to warranty. And of course storage size of the SSD. You'll also want to pay attention to the brand. Has the company been around a long time and do they have a trusted reputation? What are the reviews like for each of these products? While we can't make the right choices for your particular situation, hopefully these bits of knowledge will allow you to make a better informed decision based on what you need in an SSD drive.
    • Gen3 will generally transfer up to maximum of 3500MB/s, while Gen4 drives can push over 7000MB/s.
      • A compatible SSD for the PS5 are a NVMe PCIe 4.0 drive with 5,500MB/second or faster sequential read speeds.
    • SLC refer to single level cells and store 1 bit per cell. MLC stores 2 bits per cell. TLC and QLC store 3 and 4 bits respectively. The more bits that can be stored result in a cheaper drive, but at the cost of endurance of the drive.
    • DRAM modules are typically designed to endure a large number of read and write cycles and if you seek an SSD with a higher write speed and longer lifespan, this is what you want, but it also costs a premium.
    • TBW (terabytes written) refers to the total amount of terabytes data that a Solid-State Drive (SSD) can write in its lifetime.

Generally you won't notice a difference unless you have a work load that will take advantage of the higher speeds. Most people don't.

Yea I think WD 850x is unreal performance and still a good value. Yea it may be a little more than some….. but performance is amazing.

c'mon intel, i've never rooted for you so hard.
not likely in a near term.

storage company weren't used to reduce price that quickly before either until there was some competition from China, remember random fire and flooding that periodically affect segate westen digital, samsung or micron but suddenly magically stop appearing in recent years exactly when china was able to produce nand chips.

I have like 5 extra computers. What should I do with each one? One will be running UNRAID. What about the rest?

Waiting for 670p go to 65 again - the QLC/TLC thing is no big deal as most likely you won't hit the tbw - and the diff in tbw is small.

Speed-wise, not much difference for end user either. But somehow people seem to prefer Samsung over intel in SSD - because Samsung sells for a premium?
Samsung sells for a premium because it's a better drive for exactly the reasons you listed; TLC v QLC cache, and a higher TBW.

There IS a difference, regardless of how negligible you think it might be; I hardly consider a $10 difference to be 'premium' pricing, but IMO the cost is justified for an all-around better product.

I can hope. Intel has their own fabs and they would be a nightmare for Nvidia and AMD, IF they can get it together.

They don't need to have the best. They just need good value and reliable, that's it.

If they have the best mid-tier card, I'd jump ship so fast it would give Nvidia and AMD whiplash

TeamGroup MP34 is $74. $8 more than MP33 and you get a much faster drive and DRAM.

Well, I can't speak to all these drives here, but I've used the TeamGroup, the Adata XPG blade, and a 2TB Samsung 980 pro. The XPG and the Samsung get the heaviest use. The XPG is my rendering/scratch disk drive, the 980 Pro is my OS drive. The TeamGroup is just cheap extra storage for games and crap.

Guess which one died? Sadly the most expensive Samsung 980 Pro. I was shocked. First Samsung drive I've ever had die. Made me sad and mad at myself for not being more diligent on my backups. 🤦🤦

Samsung sent a warranty replacement, but recovering the data was a multi day nightmare from a drive that for some reason ONLY android could access - and at very slow speeds with lots of hang ups.

The TeamGroup and XPG drives continue to perform flawlessly. Of course this is just anectodal, but take it for what it's worth. Happy deal hunting!!

Which is the best bang for the buck?
As others said, hands down Western Digital.

Prefer the WD Black.
That's followed by Samsung, ADATA and Crucial (the latter two switching places from time to time).

DEFINITELY would NOT trust important data to low-cost, no/little-known names and will not touch Seagate with a 100+ ft pole.

Gen 4 vs Gen 5. Any thought on the difference?
Gen 5 as it is sounds like trash. Too much heat and throttling.

Unless you need a Gen 4 drive for a PS5, none of these make much sense when a 2TB 970 EVO Plus is available for $80 or an Intel 670P for $70. Just my opinion.

Would rather pay $10 more for Samsung 970 Evo Plus
Quote from anil_robo :
I would too. Not sure why 670p is highly regarded.
It depends on your use case. If you're mainly using the drive for an OS and video games, you're not going to notice a big difference between the two. In fact, some reviews/benchmarks show the 670P as the better performer in these cases.

Now, if you're someone who will be copying a lot of large files (for example, for video editing), then that's where the 970 EVO Plus will start to shine.

https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...d-review/2

And as far endurance ratings, a lot of people overestimate how much TBW they actually need. I've been using my current ssd for 4+ years and it only has 14TB written over 4000 hours. At that rate, the ssd will be obsolete long before I ever come close to the 740TBW rating.
