- Some variables to consider when purchasing an SSD drive include: Gen3 versus Gen4, whether the SSDs cells are SLC/MLC/TLC/QLC, DRAM vs DRAMless, and the more commonly seen specs such as sustained read/write speeds, and TBW (terabytes written lifespan), closely related to warranty. And of course storage size of the SSD. You'll also want to pay attention to the brand. Has the company been around a long time and do they have a trusted reputation? What are the reviews like for each of these products? While we can't make the right choices for your particular situation, hopefully these bits of knowledge will allow you to make a better informed decision based on what you need in an SSD drive.
- Gen3 will generally transfer up to maximum of 3500MB/s, while Gen4 drives can push over 7000MB/s.
- A compatible SSD for the PS5 are a NVMe PCIe 4.0 drive with 5,500MB/second or faster sequential read speeds.
- SLC refer to single level cells and store 1 bit per cell. MLC stores 2 bits per cell. TLC and QLC store 3 and 4 bits respectively. The more bits that can be stored result in a cheaper drive, but at the cost of endurance of the drive.
- DRAM modules are typically designed to endure a large number of read and write cycles and if you seek an SSD with a higher write speed and longer lifespan, this is what you want, but it also costs a premium.
- TBW (terabytes written) refers to the total amount of terabytes data that a Solid-State Drive (SSD) can write in its lifetime.

Yea I think WD 850x is unreal performance and still a good value. Yea it may be a little more than some….. but performance is amazing.
