The reviews are sky high. Why was it "garbage", and what did you get instead? Confused

I bought this router from Walmart last year for less. I don't remember exactly what I paid but it was about $50. It was fine when I was paying for 300 Mbps service, but when I upgraded to gig service, I haven't gotten more than 675 Mbps. Verizon claims it is the router and not the ONT. No idea if true or not.
