Reduced to USD 899 but still without even the basic keyboard doesnt seem like a good deal. Bestbuy was giving the Signature Keyboard for free along with Surface Pro 9 till last week.

Agree. Ironic as Microsoft is responsible for both Surface and the OS.

They should stick to OS. Wasn't this one of their first entries into hardware?

Yeah, the Surface RT/Pro dates back to 2012/2013. Then they introduced Laptop, Go, Laptop Go, Book, Duo (runs Android), Surface Laptop Studio, Studio, Hub, Laptop SE (in no particular order). The hardware feels premium, especially back in 2012 era when Windows devices had worse build quality compared to Apple devices. Microsoft's vision was to encourage other manufacturers to produce premium Windows devices, which that part succedeed. But, Microsoft also has other hardware - Xbox, Kin, Kinect, KB/Mouse/Webcam, HoloLens, etc.

Ironically, the best thing about my SP3 back in the day was how well it handled Linux.
