Woks that are seasoned inproperly or often with Flaxseed oil are known to peel and flake off. Rusting is a very normal experience with carbon steel anything, woks, pans, grill grates, that are not properly seasoned. What you threw away MAY have been fine, Woks require ongoing maintenance, they will 100% rust and not perform well for you if a minimum of seasoning maintenance isn't performed. YouTube search will provide thousands of options to choose from. I myself feel that ChineseCookingDemistified is an excellent resource for all things woks and Chinese style wok cooking in general. Good. Luck and happy woking!
i use this wok. i am chinese. it's cheap, gets the job done. has wok hay. wok hay = breath of the wok= literally just means turn the fire hot enough so shit cooks fast and smells really good.

u don't need a professional wok if ur not a professional chef that's cooking for gordon ramsay.
This was made by giant mandrel, then someone came along and made a bunch of dents in it. it is NOT a hammered wok lol, not that it is likely a quality that makes a big difference.

that lid - it's the kind of lid that 19th century and early 20th century villagers might use, perhaps on a steamer, because they couldn't afford steel. it is unwieldy and will not last with actual use. might as well let the kids use it for a play shield.

This is not hammered. This (expensive) one is real hand hammered https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z1D2TNP/

If you ar looking for an wok to get into Chinese cooking, I would suggest just go with a simple carbon wok with smooth surface and season it by yourself. No need to fall for this kind of BS.

Why even make the comparison with the expensive one. And calling this deal BS? Obviously this is not a professional wok. That isn't the intent. It is, however, an excellent deal for an occasional use, simple recipe wok. Not helpful.

Just threw a wok away. Not just a inexpensive one, but very poor quality. Some kind of coating was peeling and it was rusting. This is perfect timing! Thanks savvyshopper7903

This is not good. Even though a lot of the amazon reviews are idiots (they were putting it in the dish washer or managing carbon steel incorrectly), this does not seem like a quality product. The hammered looks stamped and not hand done. There seems to be flaking or metal or unusual metal discoloration?

Discoloration is ok for carbon steel but not the one that are in the amazon review pics

Bought this, i seasoned it with 3 layers of vegtable oil also did the outside.
Then used it 5-6 times for fries, sausage, bacon building the season, Heats up soo fast. I will probobly throw away the lid.

does the job under 20$ itsa no brainer for someone unsure if they ever needed one.

Yup...was gonna get one until I saw that picture. I'd rather spend more on a good one.

Just got this wok last week. Works great. Heat up wok. Heat up oil. Cook/stir fry. Wipe down. Don't use soap or dishwasher.

Carbon woks like this on a home gas or electric range are merely frying pans with taller than normal sides that rust more easily and burn food faster.

You can't get "wok hei" without using a professional grade wok cooker or an open fire. Wok hei is achieved with a heat output of around 100,000BTU. Home stoves' heat output ranges from 500BTU to 12,000BTU.

I wouldn't say this is a waste of money for everyone, maybe you just want to look like a traditional Chinese chef, but for most people, it is a waste of money, and a waste of space (it's huge), and a waste of time/effort (to keep it seasoned and rust-free).

This wok wouldn't even be good on an actual wok cooker because it is flat-bottom - which is a way to sell it to home owners thinking they are cooking "traditional" Chinese cuisine. Woks are supposed to be round bottom so that the flames on the bottom shoot up the sides of the pan, making not only the bottom but also the large surface area of the sides searingly hot. You aren't going to get that all-important side action with a home stove.

Stick to the traditional cast iron and stainless steel frying pans for which western home stoves were built.
