Did I read apple formally EOL'd the first gens? I forget where, but I read that some where.
I'm usually an Android user, and have both an Nvidia Shield and Chromecast with Google TV. The ATV 4k is the only Apple product I own, and I love it.

It's good, don't get me wrong, but it's not "hands down the best TV streaming box on the market". That award goes to the Nvidia Shield TV and has done for the last eight years running.
I am an Apple person, all my devices are Apple, but for TV, Android/Google TV OS, specifically on the Nvidia Shield TV hardware, is the best there is if you value picture and audio quality, along with features and apps.
The Apple TV is a strong second for sure, but by no means the best. People in this thread are coming from things like Roku or Amazon Fire TV sticks, in which case, I can see why they'd think the Apple TV was way better, but that's not going to be the same when you have an Nvidia Shield TV.
Great versatile device, but Apple TV can things most people want from a device nowadays.
Can't side load apps into Apple TV without it being kind of a hassle but certain niche uses are great to have with the shield though. Iptv apps are much better for example.
On the other hand apple's privacy policy is much better than google's. So if that's important to you than that's something to consider.
