Warning: this is NOT the same as a Kamodo Joe or Big Green Egg. Not even close. Does not hold heat and temp regulation is not nearly as smooth. This is just an oddly shaped grill.
Word to the wise, save up a little longer, buy a BGE or KJ, get much better cooks and it'll save you money in the long run when this things rusts out. The real brands will not.

My Akorn has held up for 5 years with no signs of rust but I keep it covered and do a good cleaning occasionally. It does take more time to learn how to dial in the temps.

It's also more efficient (saves money on charcoal) and is not as fragile and heavy as its ceramic counterparts.

I like how you can seemingly cook a butt in this. I'm on the hunt for something just a tad bit "bigger" so I can get a few racks of ribs smoking, but I feel this is perfect for camping (or showing up a friend who can't grill)
There are small rib stands available that will hold 2 racks (cut in half). Will actually hold 5 x 1/2 rack. I've done babies. Not sure about full sized tracks, but can't see why at least one wouldn't fit.

Have had mine for a while, holding up pretty well. Stays, covered and out of the weather but the paint on the wood handle all peeled off, the plastic tab on the top vent got brittle and broke off. Have to keep the intake vent nearly completely closed to maintain low 250-300° and it takes some close monitoring and micro tweaking to get it stabilized for long cooking processes. It is indeed thrifty on the use of lump charcoal and when done with the cook you can extinguish the coals for use next time by closing the vents. Have some heat induced internal oxidation (rust) but overall integrity is still good.

These work nicely until they rust out. Keep it in your garage you might get a decent life span out of it.
Yeah left mine out and the grills rusted within a couple
Months.

Char Griller claims to be highest standards, I ordered a grill came all dented and flawed, customer service is horrible. Only email and sometimes chat until they completely ignore you

Thanks! I left mine uncovered one night on accident and the bottom ended up rusting out! Purchased a bigger webber style one but I really missed how this one heats up really quick for smaller meals!
Thats because Char Griller claims to be highest standards when they really arent.

I have this Jr and the bigger model..keep them covered outside. I don't use the stock grill grates. My Jr is about 9 years old now..no rust..I just use a little cooking oil on the metal parts. If they get wet then they will rust, but with minimal care you will get many years from them.

The Jr is enough for 4 people and I used it for years, but now I usually use the bigger model.

I'll slow cook many different meats all day for meal prepping. Today I cooked a pork shoulder, a beef roast, a meat loaf, and 8 chicken legs all at the same time with out them touching on the larger model.

Also it's nice to be able to make a large pizza in the full size model. On the Jr I was making six or more 9" pizzas. I actually prefer the Jr for making pizzas as it worked really well, but it was time consuming.

The Jr is big enough for a whole chicken or even a small turkey, but it's tight.

There's stainless steel heat deflectors on amazon..I recommend these over the smoking stones, because they last forever...the smoking stones break.

I have 6 grills, including a kamado joe. I got a full size Akorn to start out.

Yes, the more expensive grills are nicer and generally more convenient, but if you want something to really learn how to grill and smoke with charcoal on, I really don't think there is anything better out there for the price. It's really a matter of putting in the time to learn.

I have the gravity 980 from Char-griller. Love it. I picked up an extra cover for my 980 and got this Jr egg griller for 50 bucks over the cover price on my 980. I'd call that slick.

This isn't this ISNT a BIG JOE. it's not even a little Joe, maybe a roll of baby backs but a full rack is wider than this is tall. For a fact!
For a fact huh...? Have you tried it? I also have a Joe Jr and have done it this way with full racks, St Louis cut. This has a larger grate area and similar dome height /radius than the Jr. So, yes it will work.

I bought mine when Walmart had them on clearance.. that was 4-5yrs ago, I think... mine stays on my front porch year around.. no cover.. and I live just outside of the rainest city in the country (Mobile, Al). I don't know what you are doing to yours, but mine hasn't rusted at all, other than surface rust on the cast iron grates. I suppose if you clean it and remove the grease build-up, then it may rust, but you don't clean a grill like that.

It's cast iron grills... of course, they are going to rust if left in the rain/wet/damp/dew. Put it under cover when not in use.. coat the grills in cooking oil.

I had an akorn for 3+ years and then bought a KJ. I disagree with this take entirely, the akorn is great if you take care of it. It works and cooks just as well as my KJ. Temp regulation is slightly different (akorn heats up faster) but you get used to it. Food on my akorn tasted smokier than on my KJ

If you aren't sure you want to jump into kamado cooking, the akorn is where to be. I'd rather spend $150-$300 on a grill to find out if I like the cooking style than $800+

I haven't bought the akorn jr, but of all the small kamados I feel like it's the only one that makes sense to buy. It's the only one that's actually portable. The ceramic ones are way to heavy.

I've got a big one, same thing. Vent handle broke. Paint all gone from the handles. Bit of rust here and there.

But if you have a spot to store it indoors when not in use, the thing is fantastic to cook with.

Yep. Mine actual grill is rusted out and broke off a section. I can buy a replacement grill from Chargriller. But now the bottom ash container retaining ring is rusted out. Thankfully the hook/latches are still good and hold it up fine.
Same rust experience here. Even with the cover on the ash container retainer ring rusted out. Otherwise, this is an excellent grill.

I live in Iowa, I had it on my patio, covered probably 30% of the time. It was junk after about 2 years. You are having good luck with that particular one.
