This or 970 Evo ($79) with an enclosure? Not really worried about the rugged aspect just dependability
This or a NVMe in a thundebolt3/4 enclosure. I wouldn't trust third party build your own USB drives.. support for their firmware on the chip/controller are spotty . At least the T7 can have its firmware upgraded on a Windows PC.

This if you want just works and works better than all at 1000mbs. Also this if you have Mac with apple silicon. Cheaper, runs cool, doesnt drop speeds at all. But not breaking any speed records - pro side that it is not throttling either. Blackmagic approved for heavy edit straight from this drive.
NVMe+tb4 = expensive, runs hot, modular meaning can replace sticks as you wish or can buy sticks maybe cheaper than non-modular solutions(though nvme are not a bargain unlike sata ssds), when hot or over long download/upload drops the speed less and that speed is less than t7 shield, runs much faster for quick bursts, full speed though only useable on a laptop equipped with tb4 preferrable not M1/M2(they cut speeds). Might be good solution if you have free nvme laying around from laptop upgrade - total cost then would be cheaper than t7.

They have all pros and cons and depends on your usage. Bought this as a happy medium - cheaper, runs cool and 1000mbs is more than enough + i am on mac so 4-7000 speeds are not useable here anyways.

Just purchased the SanDisk Pro-G40. Mainly for Time Machine. Wonder if it is worth double the cost of this one.

Given the multiple lawsuits and tech media reviews alleging Sandisk's extreme pro drives being unreliable trash, it would probably be more accurate to consider this drive as being worth double/triple/quadruple the cost of the Sandisk. .

But were those not the "extreme" series that garnered a bad reputation?
I'm referring to the G40.

For time machine, you could do with HDD - initial backup would be long but then there is no difference. G40 is more of an Samsung X5 competitor - they are more expensive because of tb3 speeds vs usb c. Anyways those speeds are overkill for timemachine application.
G40 is good but why pay ferrari price to be stuck in the traffic.
If you stick with g40, i would make sure that your mac actually utilizes the speeds listed on the box(3000?). If your mac is limiting this speed then you can not use g40 up to full potential.

G40 is also one of those drives... check the link.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/arst...amp/right, I saw that but that is really the only one instance that petapixel claimed and everyone is just quoting them. I have not found any other instance of mention of G40 failure on the internet. This drive has been out for almost two years. If it had an inherent flaw then I would suppose there would be much more buzz around it.

But anyway, this drive will be a for a tertiary backup, so speed is more important in my case. What I'm not sure is if even with thunderbolt, the drive will offer any meaningful advantage in backup type operations where you are dealing with large number of small files.
I wish there was some real world comparision of how long it takes these drives to create a 100GB time machine backup vs simply showing the blackmagic test results which is really useful for huge file transfers only.

I'm already backing up daily to my NAS using time machine. Unfortunately, it takes quite a long time. The daily backup size is almost 1-2 GB - not sure why. Haven't had time to dig into that.
Its a MBP 14" M2, so should hopefully not be the speed bottleneck

Yeah my point is that 1-2 GB daily is nothing and RED WD hdds do 115mbs writes which should equate to your 17-30 second back up a day. I think that X5/G40 are overkill for backups, this t7 shield is doable depending on your budget and HDD caters no worse.

Folks - my computer is older, with only USB 3 and Thunderbolt 2 ports. I am assuming that a user whose computer lacks a USB-C port can attach a USB-C to USB 3 connector to this drive, and get it to work on a USB 3 port (although at USB 3's slower speed). Also, I assume that connecting Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter will allow connection of this drive to a computer with a Thunderbolt 2 port, and that the data would flow at the USB-C's full speed (since Thunderbolt 2 is faster than USB-C).

Am I correct regarding the above? Thank you.
You're kind of mixing up terms. USB-C is really just connector and it doesn't dictate data speed. USB 3 (gen whatever) is what you want to reference regarding speed. Your Mac has USB-A ports that support 5gbps USB 3.0 speed (now called USB 3.1 Gen 1).
The Apple thunderbolt adapter doesn't translate USB 3 speak to thunderbolt it's only for other thunderbolt devices.
So the only solutionsI can think of to get full potential of this drive is to get a thunderbolt hub with 10gbps USB 3 gen 2. I don't think any TB2 hubs have this. You'll prolly need to get a TB3 hub with the adapter.
Or find a TB2 external PCIe box and put a USB 3 gen 2 card in there (and hope the mac drivers exist)

Thank you for your reply. If I understand your point correctly, Apple's Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter will not pass the 10gbps throughput of this Samsung drive's USB 3 gen 2 to the Thunderbolt 2 port on my computer, even though Thunderbolt 2 maxes out at 20gbps. And the reason is that USB 3 gen 2, while it has the same connector as Thunderbolt 3 and so would physically plug into Apple's adapter, is not a compatible signal for a Thunderbolt 2 port. So, other than the hub options that you suggested as possibilities (although not certain, and certainly not inexpensive), my simplest and most cost-effective connection option is at 5gbps, using the appropriate adapter to connect to the USB 3 gen 1 port on my computer. Is that correct? Thank you again for your help on this.

Even if the drive was Thunderbolt capable, you still wouldn't be able to use it with your TB2 Mac and Apple's TB2-TB3 adapter since the adapter does not provide power to the TB3 side. You would have to use another device that provides a powered TB3 port, for example a powered TB3 dock with two TB3 ports (like the one from Caldigit). You could then connect the dock to your Mac with the TB2-TB3 adapter and a TB2 cable, and connect the drive to the other TB3 port on the dock. Since this drive doesn't support Thunderbolt, you could do a similar setup, but plug the drive into the USB C port of the dock (but be careful as many docks only support 5gbps even if the have a USB C port). You are correct, the simplest and cheapest way to connect this drive is to just use the USB A cable it comes with and plug it directly into a USB3 port. It will still be fairly fast.
