Male = capital of Maldives where the airport is.
Me and the wife were seriously considering going here for our tenth anniversary next year. It looks really nice. The only caveat is flying out of Atlanta to Maldives takes over 24 hours one way!!! Maybe once we retire, but like the wife said "over 48 hours in the air doesn't feel too vacationy" :-)
Just came back from the Maldives last week. It's DEFINITELY a lot of traveling, and not a convenient place to get to. But the resorts and Maldives themselves were beautiful.

If you don't like long flights you can break it up with 12 hours being the longest. Not saying is for everyone but here's what we did and we loved it. This is better for east coast people (in my case BOS) It's also not cheap but not exorbitantly expensive.

You can get some decent flights from EU hubs to Male through Qatar. Especially if you have points.

You can get some nice hotels in Male for 99 dollars a night.

We got an Iceland air deal. Added a layover on the way back to break up our flights.

Fly to Paris via Iceland. Leave Friday evening, ideally sleep on the flight, wake up and land in paris around 1pm. Look at the Eiffel Tower, have dinner, sleep get up and to the airport the next day. Bonus if you can find a hotel with breakfast or perks for you.

Paris to Male in the afternoon Sunday (12 hour flight) Arrive Monday at 7AM. Check into hotel and pass out. Wake up, eat dinner, sleep in MLE at a cheap but nice enough hotel (we stayed at H78, it included breakfast and a ride to and from the MLE airport.

Fly out to your resort the next day, enjoy your trip.

Catch your return flight to your EU hub, Paris in this example. Fly to Iceland, enjoy 3 day layover (or 1 day) See the golden circle or just enjoy Reykjavik.

Fly back to east coast. You get to see 3 countries.

I think you can squeeze this in and only take 8 days off if you bookended it with weekends.

Highly recommend taking a hole day off on your return if you do this.

Getting to that side of the world is always a long time. Direct from NYC to Sydney is like 20 hours in the air. I wouldn't let it deter you. Get Priority Pass for lounge access and enjoy the journey!

I think we have lost the sense of vacation living in the US. Every time I have traveled to the east and tell other tourists from EU or Asia that I am taking a week off from work they react in so much surprise, and rightfully so. For them a week is nothing.
Who knows how long anyone is going to live, we keep saving for future not knowing where that is.
If you have money then use it now , take a long vacation man. Enjoy your time with your wife while you can. Who knows what retirement looks like years from now.

Also, if you are doing it. Choose from one of middle eastern airline - Emirates, Etihad or Qatar or singapore airlines. Newer planes, excellent in-flight entertainment and awesome food. I do long haul flights frequently and these airlines are on a diff level compared to American and European airlines in service for economy class. As someone else said if you are doing american airlines, then do Business class and you should be good.

I stayed here with my wife last year for our honeymoon and it was beautiful. There are a few things they could of done better (our A/C broke 3x, bikes were rusted and crappy) but all-in-all it was a trip of a lifetime. I'd suggest if you book this stay a couple days in Dubai to break up the travel. This resort specifically is one of the furthest from the Male airport so it's not the easiest to get to.

If you had a chance to go again, would you go to the same island or a different one?

To be honest there's so much to do and see in the world, not sure I would go back. There's not much culture, it's just a upscale beach resort. But for what we wanted, a relaxing beach getaway for our honeymoon, it nailed it.

Just based on research for the trip this is mid to upper tier in terms of Maldives resorts. It may cost you so I think this deal provides pretty solid value.

So for San Diego- All departing flights are 26+ hours and all return flights back to range between 30 and 50 hours... 3 days on a plane for 5 days of vacation, im in... Not.

This was extremely helpful. I am going to pitch the idea to my fiance. I never mind extra time in Paris.
