Need input on what laptop specs I need

431 659 August 30, 2023 at 07:58 AM
This is cross posted in find me a deal. Hello! My 17 year old daughter just started college and needs a new laptop. I literally have no idea what specs to look at, so I am hoping someone can give me some idea of what to search for.
She currently has an LG gram i7-8565u, 16gb ram, 512gb SSD and it is laggy so she needs something faster. She currently has Sims 4 on it and 1,090 mods that she wants to keep but needs something faster for school.

She will be doing some Zoom course and some in person so she needs to be able to work online and take notes.
Budget is hopefully no more than $1200, but flexible if it will do everything she wants and will last a few years
Size 14 inch is ideal
Do not care about brands just something reliable
Prefers USB-C charge, but not sure that is a deal breaker
Battery life 2 to 4 hours
Windows platfor

TIA for any advice from a non-tech savy mom!

I'm not sure what your daughter's major is, so hard to make a recommendation on the type of media the would use the system to create. Here's an all around system that should be great for most highend tasks and all general tasks: https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/t/16889267

Spend the money for NBD onsite repair and if she has an issue a Dell Technician will come out to replace the broken part. for durability you cannot beat a business class computer. Magnesium frames vs plastic better overall. Not usually the lighest but light means a compromise.

Thank you! So I do not need more RAM, just more SSD space?

16GB of RAM is usually fine that one just has 1 TB you can look around for the best match.

Assuming the battery is still in decent shape, if you were to reinstall windows and other software on her current laptop it's likely you could get it to preform better and maybe get another 6-12 months out of it. It's still a 5 year old laptop so no guarantees it's up to the job.

In my experience, freshman year of college sees more broken / stolen laptops than later years.

If you do replace it, a refurbished Dell Latitude or various Lenovo models are good choices.

While not nearly as robust as a Latitude, the Dell Inspiron 16 models have a higher built quality than the Inspiron 15. I mention it mainly because it's on sale.
