The forthcoming TV OS 17 supports VPN [9to5mac.com] and Apple will start allowing VPN apps on its release. I don't know what VPN services will support it, but VPN will be less of a differentiator going forward.

Probably because the 128GB model with ethernet was just on sale for the same price via Costco or a price match to them.

So i've had multiple rokus over the years, 4k firesticks, and pretty much every version of apple tv. 100% apple tv is the best out of them all. The firesticks are too laggy same for the older rokus. The newer ones can be snappyish but nothing beats the apple tv for responsavieness. That said its also like double the price if not more of all of those (when not on sale) so it makes sense its better lol.

I've never ran into an app that didn't work flawlessly. Also works great with my sound bar and on every tv (I have multiple in my house) I 100% recommend these over any other "smart" tv device.

Note it will have less apps than roku/android app stores since it uses the apple app store. Means less apps but more stability.

How similar is the UI on this to that of the Fire Stick?
(I finally have my parents well trained on Fire Sticks but just discovered that Apple bought exclusive rights to some Mariners games which really has my mom pissed.)

I don't own this but I'd venture to guess that AppleTV will be very easy for parents to use. UI and user friendliness is something Apple has it down quite good. I can never make the switch (unless they allow Kodi) but if I were to get a streaming box for parents then this would be it. This is coming from Apple hater lol.

Doesn't Apple purposely design their stuff so it doesn't work well with non-Apple services?
It would not be relevant in this case.... there are no Apple televisions or A/V receivers !

Missed the 128GB. Grabbed this one. Can I put the beta software on this to use vpn?
Yes and no. You can install tvOS 17 on here, but there aren't any VPN apps available yet because developers aren't allowed to submit apps that target the new OS until the release candidate is released. RC should be out in a week, but there's no guarantee developers will have their apps ready for day 1.

Yes, also there is no time machine to grab that deal back and those who missed can grab this one, if interested. Thanks op for sharing the deal.
The old "Time Machine" comment, I love when those start coming out 😆

I just realized it's 64gb & no Ethernet. I got the 128gb w/ Ethernet for $95 during the last deal.

I have the ethernet model. I also have a roku and firestick but keep going back to ATV because the ui is fast and remote has touchpad . it integrates with iphone seamlessly and brings keyboard automatically on iPhone when you are in search screen on atv. also iphone sceen casting and airplay work great. now what i don't like is remote has to be charged with a usb c cable and remote battery is not replaceable. it only shows a notification to charge when its around 20% left. but its last about two months on a charge.

there's no dedicated home button. so i keep going to apple tv(service ) button and then hit back button to go to other services. youtube app on atv does not support watching comments on videos yet. scrolling through video with touch area on remote can be frustrating sometimes.

dedicated siri button on edge of remote is great addition. overall atv runs cold while my roku and firestick run hot sometimes.

I totally agree with you.. not sure why Costco even had the 128GB on sale, it was a not readily available anywhere including online. This is a great deal for $99

You can change the TV button to go home instead in the settings.

They had a Wi-Fi + Ethernet model on sale for $99.99 a few days back, hence this isn't a great deal.
It was also unobtanium for many (most?) of us.

If you are at all in the Apple ecosystem and this fits your budget, just do it. You will not have regrets.

Count me in the "I own every iteration of fire stick/roku" camp. I ended up buying 6 used like new Gen 2 models of these and standardized across my house (except for one Nvidia shield on my projector).

These just work. They're easy to use, fast/smooth, developers (almost) always bring their A game for the ATV iteration of their app.

The 64gb gen 2 is arguably superior than the 64 g3, but you have to go with what's available.

In for one, finally trying this platform as I have been having issues with my Roku ultra. Wife and I also mirror from our iPhone's a lot and this may be better at handling that.

Ive used Roku and Chromecast. Use a ton of Youtube. Problem with both is that I cannot play youtube at higher speed. Does AppleTV allow you tp play youtube at higher speed?

I replaced a 3 yr old Roku Ultra box with one of the 128g Apple devices. Wanted Ethernet, that's why I went with that model. Nothing wrong with the Roku, just wanted to try a different box. The apple is not as good as the Roku. I'm keeping it because I paid $120 for it from Costco, but the apps are glitchy (specifically YouTube plays horrible while it tries to play ads and the Pluto app has to be deleted and reinstalled weekly for example). Constantly restarts and the remote feels horrible in the hand. The lines are too sharp and the remote too small. I had to buy a cover for it to give some size to be even remotely comfortable. When it dies, I will go back to a Roku player.
