I've never ran into an app that didn't work flawlessly. Also works great with my sound bar and on every tv (I have multiple in my house) I 100% recommend these over any other "smart" tv device.
Note it will have less apps than roku/android app stores since it uses the apple app store. Means less apps but more stability.

Additionally, talking about college students. Using the word naive and calling me an Android fanboy doesn't sound like a college student to you?
Count how many engineers are using Apple products vs non-Apple.
Your opinion is not shared with the majority of engineers in the world.

The Max app makes it difficult to exit at the end of a show. The BritBox app had a lot of problems but they appear to have fixed some of those (I couldn't get back in to see the next episode in a series or would have to restart the box). The Peacock app if not used for a while just sits on the welcome screen with the bouncing multicolor circles and requires a reboot of the Apple TV.
A lot of other apps do work great. Just some are not implemented well.
I have a fire TV now, it's OK but laggy and glitch from time to time. I also recently got a 4k Google TV chromecast for a different TV for $40 a year or so ago. It's nice as I have an android phone but I've always been curious how does the Apple TV compare. Any input?

That being said, it would be nice to simply be able to start VPN on the Apple TV and use the MLB app from there.

Better is subjective.
Apple is better, whether it's a laptop, smart watch, phone, streamer, earbuds, etc.
Apple TV is nice if you're in the eco system. I can pop in my AirPods at night in bed so as not to disturb my gf and they automatically connect to my Apple TV.
