The forthcoming TV OS 17 supports VPN [9to5mac.com] and Apple will start allowing VPN apps on its release. I don't know what VPN services will support it, but VPN will be less of a differentiator going forward.

Probably because the 128GB model with ethernet was just on sale for the same price via Costco or a price match to them.

So i've had multiple rokus over the years, 4k firesticks, and pretty much every version of apple tv. 100% apple tv is the best out of them all. The firesticks are too laggy same for the older rokus. The newer ones can be snappyish but nothing beats the apple tv for responsavieness. That said its also like double the price if not more of all of those (when not on sale) so it makes sense its better lol.

I've never ran into an app that didn't work flawlessly. Also works great with my sound bar and on every tv (I have multiple in my house) I 100% recommend these over any other "smart" tv device.

Note it will have less apps than roku/android app stores since it uses the apple app store. Means less apps but more stability.

I am a software engineer and a techie. This is not an attack but a general statement (and not to you since you develop apps): Of course, someone who is simplistic minded and does not know any better will say Apple is better. I look at specs which Android always comes out with better hardware, on the same year release as there Apple counterpart. Features as well usually Android is on the forefront, whereas, Apple sees and mimics. The ability to install what I want, whenever I want. The ability to customize my phone the way I see fit, including launchers. I can inject a payload into my nintendo switch and hack it - straight from my android for christ sakes. The freedom and power is yours when it comes to Android.

Additionally, talking about college students. Using the word naive and calling me an Android fanboy doesn't sound like a college student to you?
Not sure if you are still in school, but I invite you to visit a tech company sometime.

Count how many engineers are using Apple products vs non-Apple.

Your opinion is not shared with the majority of engineers in the world.

Here's hoping against hope that the VPN connection will allow apps to think they are connected at the VPN location. That would make the Apple TV the killer MLB.TV box
If you use PIA vpn, you can simply change the dns on the Apple TV and it will show you somewhere else. I actually didn't know about this and tried it out the other day. Don't need an app installed. The VPN app will just make it easier to turn VPN on or off.

I love my Apple TV, but I have run across some poorly implemented applications. It's not the devices fault, it's the application implementation.

The Max app makes it difficult to exit at the end of a show. The BritBox app had a lot of problems but they appear to have fixed some of those (I couldn't get back in to see the next episode in a series or would have to restart the box). The Peacock app if not used for a while just sits on the welcome screen with the bouncing multicolor circles and requires a reboot of the Apple TV.

A lot of other apps do work great. Just some are not implemented well.

I asked the last time on the other apple TV post asking how does this compare to a 4k Google TV chromecast but I don't recall seeing any responses.

I have a fire TV now, it's OK but laggy and glitch from time to time. I also recently got a 4k Google TV chromecast for a different TV for $40 a year or so ago. It's nice as I have an android phone but I've always been curious how does the Apple TV compare. Any input?

You bet, though in my experience--in a multi-user household with a plethora of IoT devices--this has caused more headaches and instability than it's worth. My current workflow isn't that bad--I connect the VPN client on the Windows PC or Mac mini, login to MLB in Chrome and start the local game, cast the tab to my TV and full-screen it. I have the VPN service anyway, and the additional $5 for an MLB.TV code from a SDer makes the slight hassle worth it vs paying for cable just to watch our team.

That being said, it would be nice to simply be able to start VPN on the Apple TV and use the MLB app from there.
Agreed. I hope it will work the same way as what I've done on firesticks in the past. We'll see.

Apple is better.
Better is subjective.
Apple is better, whether it's a laptop, smart watch, phone, streamer, earbuds, etc.

I am waiting to see what comes out of next week. Could be a good gift for family that I have but I need ethernet as all my ATVs are hardwired for Plex, etc.

For purely turning on and watching Roku Ultra is cheaper and superior. Faster and a simpler UI.

Is there a difference in the display between ATV 2 and 3, I had 2 and it's much brighter than the 3 (that I setup using one screen) so everything should be carry forward.. but 3 is so dull in display.. any experiences appreciated

I'm pretty sure that Apple is "faster", but you're not wrong otherwise. Roku is perfectly fine, although the ads on the home screen can go.
Apple TV is nice if you're in the eco system. I can pop in my AirPods at night in bed so as not to disturb my gf and they automatically connect to my Apple TV.
