I have a serious question - You sound like a calculator enthusiast yourself. What do you do with calculators that drives your interest? I am an engineer and rarely find use for a calculator these days. For me, having a high-end calculator would be like having a racecar with no track.
Honestly though, not making America's kids any smarter at math after they allowed calculators even on college admission tests.

And that's even after rich states like CA spending 2x+ more on K-12 than many of the countries beating America on standardized math tests.
Just buy the minimum (cost) required, but absolutely have the kids learn to do their homework by pencil and paper only, Fast.
Simply learning how to use the abacus well enough to visualize working a virtual one in one's mind (2, 3 years of lessons) will allow the little ones to murder classmates on a ton of math tests.
TI-30 is the preferred, and that, I think it's just to keep everyone on the same page.
My daughter's died while she was in 10th grade and we purchased her a Casio with no issues, but things are different in high school to middle school.
My son who just went into 8th grade has the TI-30, it's still on required school supply list.
Contrast this with some of the graphing models that, under regular enough use, will justify carrying spare batteries just in case.
Good luck!

As an example, I was able to get my job gift me the Casio fx-CG500 (a sort of anniversary present alternative to a gold watch) and the primary function was to hand it to my youngest for goofing around in the integrated periodic table during trips to school in the car.
Good luck!

Otherwise it was a capable, very programmable calculator.
Likely all are about the same and it's more about following along with the teacher and knowing the button layout.

Otherwise it was a capable, very programmable calculator.
Edit: And I did the Finance class where you learn to press the right buttons to get bond yields / NPV instead of thinking, and that wasn't math either.
