Just as a FYI, 4Cr14 steel genuinely sucks, you'll be sharpening it all the time if you actually use it. Great for corrosion resistance, but at .38% carbon this is almost a low carbon steel, soft ,the edge will roll over easy and won't keep an edge long. I'm certainly not a steel snob, but unless you are using this steel in a kitchen knife that you plan to sharpen regularly, I would stay away from it.

Agreed. It is the knife world equivalent of shrinkflation. The budget knives are now using essentially budget kitchen knife steel. I feel 4Cr is beneath acceptable, and I'm also not a knife steel snob but do have some standards. You're paying for the name, nothing more.

I'd suggest anyone interested pay a bit more for something better, it would be well worth the marginal additional investment. Lots of solid entry level knives in the $35-$50 range most would be thrilled with.

I'm surprised they put this kind of steel on a $20 (around) knife, used to be you found this kind of low quality steel only on $5 knives. Shrinkflation indeed has come to the knife world. Good thing there are still a lot of $20-$30 knives with decent and even good steels like D2 or even 9cr18mov. I hope this trend does not last for too long.

Yeah it's crazy, and unfortunately because of inflation it's likely here to stay : /

I think western manufacturers need to focus on quality and stop trying competing on price. It doesn't work. The Chinese are pumping out fairly good quality knives and it's hard to justify buying a $20 chinese made Kershaw with 4Cr when I can get a $25-$35 chinese brand knife with much better construction and better materials.

They just outsource $10-$12 designs and have their name put in the handle plastic and double the price. Companies are gutting the quality of their brand in my opinion.

The same with shoes, and even the name brands like nike, saucony, new balance etc are doing it. Way back when, the soles of sneakers were the slow wearing silica rubber, thick, the eva foam was well protected by the thick sole. Now the silica rubber is thin with intentional exposing the eva foam by not covering it. Planned obsolescence they shorten the life of the shoe by design so in 5 years time where before you would have bought a single shoe now you buy 4. Sad how unethical practice of intentionally shortening the lifespan of a product and screwing the customers is common practice.

I've definitely noticed shoe quality decline while prices skyrocket. I remember paying $110 for a pair of Nike Tailwind IV's when they were released and they lasted 5+ years and were dirty and beat up but the air soles were intact, the toes intact, and the sole still had grip. Recently I've purchased $180 pairs of Nikes and multiple different models all failed within 18 months...air sole failure, toes worn through, sole separating from the front, complete garbage.

Nike said they'd replace them under warranty but I didn't keep the receipt and apparently it is ONE no receipt warranty (from the stamped production date) per person per lifetime lol.

Meanwhile...they pay those poor sweat shop workers like $0.60/hour to sew up their $180 shoes. I'm about over it.

Yep, and the saddest part about the whole thing across multiple industries ? We allow it to happen, we endorse this unethical behavior by buying their products despite being stabbed in the back by these unethical practices. We refuse to endorse companies and products that are built well and designed well and instead chose to believe the hype and the lies otherwise known as marketing propaganda. We believe the smoke and mirrors instead of supporting products and companies that are doing right by us. I honestly think as people and as Americans, we are getting more stupid and regressing instead of improving as time goes on.

Completely agree. We have allowed so many slow burning atrocities to occur. We keep electing politicians that lie and squander our money and send us off to pointless wars, and we buy products from companies that exploiting cheap and often coerced overseas labor, pollute our water and air, sell us junk and toxin filled products and food for laughably high prices, and do it all for obscene profits. Nearly none of them ever account for their behavior, and laugh all the way into power and fortune. We allow this, and when we question it there are 1001 ways we are labeled as the problem.

I do feel the winds are shifting however. People are waking UP!

People are waking up ? I'm glad you are able to stay positive and remain hopeful about the future. However, I don't see it. What I do see is still degradation and worsening, I see shifting, but it's not towards improvement but the opposite. I do hope your right though, and hopefully I'm wrong in what I see. If I ever see positive direction, I doubt it's going to me in the immediate or even near future. Hopefully future generations are able to correct what the previous generations and even my generation didn't get right.
