Can confirm this batch is used SSD with tweaked firmware that appears to be brand new. Same batch has also become available in China recently.

smartctl output:

Note that 228(0xE4) is not 0.
Earlier Intel tools cannot reset E4.

If you look up the warranty, you will probably deduct that this batch of SSD is sold some time in 2019. Intel sold its SSD business to Hynix, which makes things a little blurry but this is still obvious.

Be aware these are U.2 format drives, not M.2 cards or SATA drives!!

you can use u.2 drives with cheap m.2 adapters. they speak PCIe NVME

To add more to this, if you haven't used U.2 drives: you can modify nvme slots to run these with adapter cables. You can also use extra pcie slots with an adapter. The x1 slots should have the electical power but you are limited to x1 speeds. For most home use, you won't utilize x4 speeds frequently with the drive.

U.2 drives also have much higher idle wattage use than sata ssd.

data hording is a thing. I've seen many folks go on quests to get version images of every linux flavor ever released. Guess they might need to fire up an old 386 one day and they want to be prepared.

My next big storage upgrade will put me at about a 500tb for my homelab. a big portion of that is backup for my homelab/homeprod vm's - a lot of it is archival storage for video project - some is for active workstation backups, and 85% of "empty space" gets plotted for chia farming because because I might as well get some pocket change if I have to keep the drives online anyhow and chia lookups don't really take much in terms of system resources or even disk activity (a farmer will run easily on a raspberry pi 3, which means it isn't a drop in the bucket for my 5950x/64gb TrueNAS SCALE box), and I just delete plots as I need to use more space on the array.
