They do it so they don't have to produce multiple versions of the packaging or try and estimate exactly the proportion to make for each platform. It's much easier for companies, especially smaller ones, to release them separately and if someone wants a "collector's edition" they can buy both items.

Agree with all this. The problem is that most people want the 'rare' Collector's editions where you have to order in first 2 minutes, or else have a friend at GameStop if there are any left. Once they become 'trinkets' at this seems to be, it ends up on Woot, which is still fun but probably not a Collector's item.

I'd have to say the funniest thing is special editions that come with 'Steelbook' even though the game is digital download and does not come with a disc. Some do not even have a disc version available separately, but you get the Steelbook for the disc that doesn't exist! Don't get me wrong, I love Steelbooks too, but that gets a bit silly.
