I found it hard because each person plays a distinct character with distinct goals, ways to win, and ways to play, so I couldn't learn what to do by watching others.
The most interesting part was that I walked away feeling like it was a really complicated game, but my friends felt that once they'd gotten the hang of it, it had little replay value. They felt they now knew how to win in each role and wouldn't enjoy it again.

I have a ton of board games and never ever buy without checking there first.
I think you need to play it consistently to get the hang of it. We have it and when you only play it once a month, it's hard to learn. We found some of the rules to not be very clear.
