They have two older Oasis models which I'll compare here:

- 2016 (8th Gen): $50
- 2017 (9th Gen) $80 (+$30)

Advantages of the 2017:

- Physically larger screen (35% larger sqr) with the same 300 PPI
- 8 GB storage (instead of 4 GB)
- 1,000 mAh battery (Vs. 245 mAh)
- IPX8 waterproofing (Vs. unrated) "Continues immersion, 1 M or more"

Both use a USB Micro/Type-B port unfortunately. Woot only has the 2017/9th Gen in Graphite rather than Black.

For me, the physical buttons are huge (in importance, not necessarily in size). I've had many Kindles over the years, and the Oasis is my favorite. At this price, I think it's worth a try.

Does anyone know how this compares to a new paperwhite? From what I can tell, the main difference on the new Paperwhite side is that it's waterproof and uses usb c, whereas the older Oasis doesn't. I've never used an Oasis, so I'm not sure of the difference in using the two, except that many love the physical page-turn buttons. It's also lighter than the current paperwhite (which isn't heavy).

I'm tempted to get this Oasis just out of curiosity, but since I already have a new paperwhite and one that's several years old that still works great, I know I don't need it! I just like to try out different gadgets. If I didn't already have a new paperwhite, though, I'd definitely jump on this.

I have the 9th gen and for me, the page turn buttons are a necessity, the ergonomic design is a necessity, and the lighter weight is a necessity. But if those don't matter to you, then I don't think it would be worth it compared to a brand new Paperwhite.

People always have loved oasis, it's just old but still servers same purpose I think as long as internals are good.. battery is only thing I would be concerned with but maybe refurb means it was replaced

I bought a refurb 2015 Paperwhite within the last year, and the battery is excellent. I kinda doubt they changed it, the batteries are just great on these things. At the time I bought it, I had and was still using a 2013 or 2014 paperwhite (bought when it was newly released) and the battery was still great on that, too. So I think odds are good these devices will still have good batteries, too.

But you didn't mention the biggest difference IMHO, which is the 2016 (8th Gen) is much lighter at 131g versus 194g for the newer bigger screen and battery

This is my daily driver and hands down my favorite e-reader. I like the weight and dimensions MUCH better than the newer models. This will literally fit in the back pocket of your jeans (or mine, at least). There are only a few concerns here: I bought mine the year it came out and the battery life was never great. 8 weeks is a HUGE stretch here. BUT....battery replacement is really very easy and the new batteries easy to get on Amazon. I DO wonder if these have been sitting in a warehouse somewhere how much life the batteries have in them. I also wonder about whether this comes with the charging cover? It lists a color as 'whisky' so I'm assuming it does? Literally, the only things I would change would be, USB-C charging, warmer backlighting (although the science on how blue light affects sleep has been walked back a lot and you can make it VERY dim), waterproofing and battery life. All of these are minor and I've not been able to find a reason to upgrade. It feels and looks premium and I often get compliments and questions from people with newer readers because it's so thin and light. A near perfect device. I'm tempted to get another for backup.

I have this and also the magnetic cover which includes battery. If anyone who ordered this deal can comment if they got the cover, that will be useful information. And would make me buy it as a backup/ gift. Thanks in advance.
