The fine print says minimum qualified plan is 75/mo. That's where they get you with these "free deals" - locking you in at high monthly rate for 3 yrs.

Quick math assuming you are ok with Visible/Mint at $30/mo - overpaying by $45/mo for 36=$1620, that's what you are paying for the "free iphone".

If you live in an area which has good coverage then better buy an unlocked phone and get a carrier of your choice than getting robbed by these guys for 36 months.
I have an unlocked phone & pay $20 per month for service. Can't be happier.

I know this is the AT&T thread but seeing TMo mentioned. Are there details of the Costco/TMo/iPhone 15 deals somewhere?

just go ahead cancel and place a new order. There is no way that ATT will help you with it
problem is that you can't cancel the order. I placed mine before the deal was out, and now it won't allow me to cancel.

I end up with the error message below

Something went wrong
Your order is getting ready to ship, so we're not able to cancel it as requested. If you still want to cancel your order, you can return your items within 14 business days.

Google Fi is terrible for me in Dublin, CA area. No signal all the time. Looking to switch to ATT.
Guess you will have to switch. Google Fi mostly uses T-mobile. My area is very good. I can get 326 mbps download 10bps upload. They have great customer service. can get all things done through chat. dont have to deal with CS with accent.

Help me understand - why would anyone do a deal with bill credits and call that "slick"? Especially with a trade. Aren't there better deals to be had that don't tie you to a carrier for what is essentially a 3yr contract?

Point #1 & #4 are spot on

2&3 are dead wrong.
It depends on what you are upgrading from. There is quite a difference between the 11/12 and the 15.

Also, I disagree with the recession argument. It's been shown that during recession times or even those who aren't making ends meet; cell phones are still purchased and had. Broke or not, people still buy these $1k phones.

T-Mobile has a deal that will pay off your phone if switching from Verizon or ATT. Has anyone tried to take the installment plan from Verizon or Att and turn around and switch to TMobile?
Where is this? I just switched to att, and I absolutely hate it. Would like to go back to tmo

Don't do this deal with a trade in!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the 13 pro max I got in 2021. If I want to get this deal, I have to "pay off" my current phone for $433 (13 payments left). But...I still have 13 bill credits of $27 left ($353)? Nope... those go away. This is a SCAM! ATT takes your trade in and then doles out your credits in an unfair way.

I at least thought att would just charge me the difference in the payoff amount: $433 -remaning bill credits: $353 = $100. After all, I would be committing to another 36months with them on a new phone.

Better off selling your phone privately. The ATT trade in value is generous but, you have to commit to keeping your phone for 36months to actually get the credit.
ahhmm,.. yeah.. it's always been like that...probably the same with tmobile and verizon

this thread is so long! I hope someone can answer if phone upgrade through retention still applies today. I hope it still exists. It's time I get a new phone.

You can't. They said you need to cancel, and wait 72 hours before ordering again through Costco. The 72 hours is to clear your phone so it's in "upgradable" status again.
I am in AT&T purgatory. No amount of escalation or talking to retentions has been able to get phone into upgradable status. I am losing my mind on this one. I have never seen sales prevention at this level.

Agreed. I was bit by the same thing. None of these "deals" are real, just extended payment plans that lock you in for 3 years

I tried calling retention this weekend. They wouldn't even match the Costco deal. They offered me $5 per line (2 lines on the old unlimited plan that includes MAX).

I'm torn because I'm happy with my ATT service everywhere, MAX is now $15-20 a month if I get that separately, My cheapest other option is probably through Spectrum, because they're $40/line/month for unlimited on Verizon's network and will give me a year free on one line. ATT is also doing away with the autopay discounts if you use your CC, but if you drop the CC you lose their protections.

FYI only

I've done this upgrade through Costco 4 times. They pay more for porting in lines or creating a new account

We have 5+ lines at AT&T with one of the 20% discounts (Teacher/ Healthcare/ Military/ etc.).

We pay $22.50 each for the lowest unlimited plan, for 5-6 lines, plus about $5 tax each for $27.68

All lines get the same upgrades

Most of my upgrades are free after the $150 in Costco credits and the waived (actually refunded) activation fee with a cheap trade in. Samsung S7 trade for a Flip5 was a $75 phone plus tax, then $150 back.

If you look at the cost of an $800 phone, it comes to about $22 per month over 36 months. So basically it's pay $27 and get a free phone, or buy the phone and get almost free cell service, just pay the taxes

If i want a new phone, I can trade in my Samsung S23 or Flip5 at Samsung and get a new unlocked phone and keep the credits coming. If I wanted to switch, most major carriers would pay off the phones to get me to switch

+++

I don't want to get into the different carriers, the problem with credits, etc. Just not worth the energy.

I've had T-mobile, Verizon, Mint, Cricket etc. AT&T is the only carrier that really works at our house, and at our cottage in the UP of Michigan, so I'll stick with them

In fact, I switched back to AT&T from T-mobile when covid started with work from home. I could really only use wifi calling at home with T-mobile. After a couple of 12+ hour Xfinity outages it really didn't make sense for me any more :<)

Good luck
Do you know if you get the 100 costco gift card + 50 phone credit/ per line upgraded or just ones per plan?

probably will charge you the "restocking Fee" if you can't cancel it before it get to your house. might be worth a call to get it resolved
