Quick math assuming you are ok with Visible/Mint at $30/mo - overpaying by $45/mo for 36=$1620, that's what you are paying for the "free iphone".
I have an unlocked phone & pay $20 per month for service. Can't be happier.

2&3 are dead wrong.
Also, I disagree with the recession argument. It's been shown that during recession times or even those who aren't making ends meet; cell phones are still purchased and had. Broke or not, people still buy these $1k phones.

I have the 13 pro max I got in 2021. If I want to get this deal, I have to "pay off" my current phone for $433 (13 payments left). But...I still have 13 bill credits of $27 left ($353)? Nope... those go away. This is a SCAM! ATT takes your trade in and then doles out your credits in an unfair way.
I at least thought att would just charge me the difference in the payoff amount: $433 -remaning bill credits: $353 = $100. After all, I would be committing to another 36months with them on a new phone.
Better off selling your phone privately. The ATT trade in value is generous but, you have to commit to keeping your phone for 36months to actually get the credit.

I'm torn because I'm happy with my ATT service everywhere, MAX is now $15-20 a month if I get that separately, My cheapest other option is probably through Spectrum, because they're $40/line/month for unlimited on Verizon's network and will give me a year free on one line. ATT is also doing away with the autopay discounts if you use your CC, but if you drop the CC you lose their protections.
I've done this upgrade through Costco 4 times. They pay more for porting in lines or creating a new account
We have 5+ lines at AT&T with one of the 20% discounts (Teacher/ Healthcare/ Military/ etc.).
We pay $22.50 each for the lowest unlimited plan, for 5-6 lines, plus about $5 tax each for $27.68
All lines get the same upgrades
Most of my upgrades are free after the $150 in Costco credits and the waived (actually refunded) activation fee with a cheap trade in. Samsung S7 trade for a Flip5 was a $75 phone plus tax, then $150 back.
If you look at the cost of an $800 phone, it comes to about $22 per month over 36 months. So basically it's pay $27 and get a free phone, or buy the phone and get almost free cell service, just pay the taxes
If i want a new phone, I can trade in my Samsung S23 or Flip5 at Samsung and get a new unlocked phone and keep the credits coming. If I wanted to switch, most major carriers would pay off the phones to get me to switch
+++
I don't want to get into the different carriers, the problem with credits, etc. Just not worth the energy.
I've had T-mobile, Verizon, Mint, Cricket etc. AT&T is the only carrier that really works at our house, and at our cottage in the UP of Michigan, so I'll stick with them
In fact, I switched back to AT&T from T-mobile when covid started with work from home. I could really only use wifi calling at home with T-mobile. After a couple of 12+ hour Xfinity outages it really didn't make sense for me any more :<)
Good luck
