Sure I'd love to upgrade the phone sooner than every three years, but most of the enhancements from year to year with the iPhone are minor, so its not a big deal. What I do like is getting a new phone for free every three years due to the bill credit subsidy that the major carriers provide.

Customer service line/chats currently have long wait times. I waited on the phone just now for an hour and had to give up.
Also many people are concerned about shipping in their phone due to many horror stories about the receiving company claiming the phone is not in adequate condition or the phone is lost in transit. So bringing in the phone to a local store ensures you get full value for the trade in.
