Beware if you host your "content" on dedicated servers. They started implementing IP blocking, so if your hosting your stuff on Hetzner, or services with Hetzner IPs they will start blocking access. Not sure how long before it moves to other providers.

Are you trying to figure out what Plex is or what the Plex Pass is?

Plex has two pieces. One piece is the server. You would install a program called Plex Media Server on your computer. Then you tell Plex the location of all your movies and media you own. It scans everything and organizes it.

Then you go to your smart tv devices (fire tv, android box, roku, etc) You can install the Plex CLIENT on these and watch the movies from your Plex your server.

Plex is free if that is how you use it.

The Plex PASS is just some additional features for Plex. It lets you watch movies on your phone/mobile devices. You can download movies from your server. It allows "hardware transcoding". Skip intro/skip credits, etc.

I'll be the first.

Plex lost their way long ago. I want (and bought) to play local media, not have them push their stream crap on me.

Long time Emby user. Love it. UI isn't as polished as Plex but it's worth the effort to use because of my hate for plex streaming.

Also JellyFin.

Plex is phenomenal. I have the free version and have been waiting for this deal.

Anybody that has a library of digital movies, this is great for playing your collection from anywhere around the globe.
So is jellyfin and that's free and open source.

I want so badly to use Jellyfin but the apps just aren't there and I rarely ever watch on my computer. Jellyfin also don't support audio delay. It seems like half my files have to be adjusted as the audio doesn't match up with the video. Unfortunately, Plex is still the king for your home video server.
So much misinformation here. I use jellyfin. It has audio delay settings. In fact, I use it on my Sony TV.

Not great, Linus techtips has complained about that feature being broken multiple times.

Does it work if you connect hdmi directly from computer to receiver input? Or cast screen mirror through another device like chrome cast, shield, roku?
I'd assume theyre smart enough to already know that and not talking about a laptop or they just want the convenience of running off of network and not connecting/reconnection hdmi - hence why they mention the shield/apple tv.

Also casting is not good quality.

Recently set up Plex on an Unraid server.
Nothing in their interface has been pushing any kind of streaming to me.

Maybe it did when I first logged in but I disabled stuff like "live TV" and whatnot and now it just shows me what I want.

My own movies and series. Nothing more.

The number of times I've had jellyfin crap out mid stream, die when paused, or fail to seek... It's fine if you don't mind dealing with frustration. I gave up on it, too much stress.

It's easy to ignore the Plex streaming content and just browse your own library.

I got Plex for $75 lifetime pass 5 to 6 years ago wondering how long it would go. It's been going good so far. I use it with my ds920 and it was pretty much plug and play with no fiddling around. Tried Ember and Jellyfin but had trouble accessing them outside my home network. I don't use any of the streaming provided by Plex. I just pin my folders on the dashboard for quick access.
Quick question: trying to setup my ebook library with a similar setup but having difficulty. Anybody has any suggestions? I have tried ubooquity and calibre but not able to set it up in ds920 and also not able to access outside home network through app
Not sure about Synology but I use Unraid and have a qbittorrent + Readarr + calibre + calibre-web setup.

I connected Readarr to the Goodreads site and whenever I want a book, go to Goodreads and add it to my want to read list.

Readarr picks it up, sends it to qbittorrent, then when it's don't exports it to calibre. Then calibre-web reads from calibre in a nice UI that I access from a reverse proxy.

I don't touch anything but Goodreads to request and calibre-web to read.

I just disabled that stuff once and I've never seen it again https://imgur.com/GExAoxH.jpg

I forgot it was even a thing.

Hardware encoding is the main one. Quicksync is a beast when you can use it.

I'll take "things don't work near as well and I wish people would quit acting like its a real alternative" for a $1000 Alex
