For those of you who don't know what this is:

This is a small travel router that connects to an ethernet port of an existing network, OR can be connected to an existing Wi-Fi network and used to create your own personal Wi-Fi network but this router uses a VPN to mask your traffic when used.

It can also be used on Visible to share a phone connection with multiple devices but you will be required to use a TTL hack to make it work.

There are a few ways, the one I use is:
1. Connect phone/laptop to captive login wifi.
2. Connect GL.iNet to power
3. Log in to GL.iNet web interace
4. Change GL.iNet router MAC address to the same as that of your phone/laptop.
5. Connect GL.Inet to hotel WiFi, and it'll work.

A big use for this is also when you have a hotel that charges for, and limits the number of devices that connect to wifi. This isn't as common in the US anymore, but still common internationally. Also, if you have a ton of electronics with you, having this would save you from having to reconfigure each device for the new SSID.

Side note, I have this and it works great, the VPN works well too.

The feature I like the most is to use it as a wireguard openvpn server

Great tiny traveling router. Got one when I was traveling to Thailand earlier this year. pretty helpful in the hotel where wifi not great , you can use it for ethernet and VPN connection.
Serious question, if the hotel Wi-Fi is not great, how will you get Internet with this router? Aren't you connecting to the hotel Wi-Fi with this router anyways?

Some rooms have Ethernet jacks. But this can also act as a WiFi extender.

It's situational. Sometimes you're just s.o.l. but might have good cellular to tether too. Some rooms do have Ethernet jacks but sometimes they are slower than wifi. Sometimes the signal near the hallway will be a marked improvement over the desk (which tend to be towards the exterior wall.) This probably has a much better antenna than what's in your laptop also.

But yeah... sometimes you're just out of luck and this won't solve that problem.

I got one and had to return it. The hardware seemed pretty good, but the documentation is really poor. I have a router that needs the wireless mac address entered into a table. Trying to find the units wireless mac address was an exercise in frustration, as there is zero documentation where to find it and zero support getting the info. I asked 3 times and got 3 different and conflicting answers. I gave up, returned it and got a refund. At least that part went OK. I figured that something as straightforward as the wireless mac address could not be found nor answered, that more difficult issues would not be addressed. I ended up getting a rather expensive firewalla purple.
The forums are pretty supportive, for basic and advanced alike. Not that you need it now, but as an example, finding the MAC: https://forum.gl-inet.com/t/gl-ar...dress/3644

Or another version. The label always has one MAC on it, which is the wired WAN. From there, you can calculate the wireless ones: https://forum.gl-inet.com/t/wirel...ss/32246/4

Thank you. I was trying to figure out what the point of having this was. In my earlier travels I encountered ethernet ports in many hotels, but rarely of late, so didn't see much point in adding another wifi network to an existing (hotel) network for a 10x10 room. Having the built-in VPN seems like the biggest benefit.
Connecting wired devices to a hotel Wi-Fi. Connecting my Roku to a network that makes you authenticate each device with a website. Boosting the Wi-Fi signal for the devices in your room. There's tons of uses here.

Yup works but I had to use the clone mac address feature. Then I was able to hookup my Chromecast, phone and laptop. The wi-fi on the cruise was slow to support multiple devices anyways. They claim 2mbps per user but most of the time it was less than 1mbps. The Chromecast would play videos basically at 240p while using my phone.
My experience was with Royal Caribbean.

Great little travel router to hide you from your corporate IT when you telework from abroad 😂

Also works well for sharing the in-flight wifi.

I use it because my Nest camera (for baby monitor) and Chromecast don't work with networks that require captive portal login. The router supports captive portal and then lets my other devices get connectivity. VPN is just a bonus.

Curious how this hides your IP from corp when outside?

If you're looking for GL.iNet devices to support EasyTether (without root your phone), this model does not support EasyTether, but Slate Plus AP1300.

Another quality of life benefit I haven't seen posted here yet is caching your network connection. If you're someone like me and has quite a few WiFi capable devices, connecting each one to the hotel's WiFi every time is tedious.

With this you can set your device (phone, laptop, tablet, gaming console, Chromecast/Firestick/Roku, etc) to connect to the travel router for first time setup. Afterwards your device will remember the SSID network name and credential.

Anytime I go traveling I can bring the GL router along and don't need to manually login to the hotel's WiFi on each device. Saves quite a bit of time.
