For those of you who don't know what this is:

This is a small travel router that connects to an ethernet port of an existing network, OR can be connected to an existing Wi-Fi network and used to create your own personal Wi-Fi network but this router uses a VPN to mask your traffic when used.

It can also be used on Visible to share a phone connection with multiple devices but you will be required to use a TTL hack to make it work.

There are a few ways, the one I use is:
1. Connect phone/laptop to captive login wifi.
2. Connect GL.iNet to power
3. Log in to GL.iNet web interace
4. Change GL.iNet router MAC address to the same as that of your phone/laptop.
5. Connect GL.Inet to hotel WiFi, and it'll work.

A big use for this is also when you have a hotel that charges for, and limits the number of devices that connect to wifi. This isn't as common in the US anymore, but still common internationally. Also, if you have a ton of electronics with you, having this would save you from having to reconfigure each device for the new SSID.

Side note, I have this and it works great, the VPN works well too.

Thanks, OP! Just picked one up. I like the idea of having a single known AP already assigned across my devices to use while traveling that also allows the flexibility to encrypt all network traffic through my home VPN.

whats the difference between this vs just bringing your home router with you, other than that home routers are a bit bigger?
There's a lot of reasons you wouldn't want to just drag a consumer router along.

If you're literally talking about disconnecting the router you use at home, the most obvious one is that it's already configured for your home. Why would you want to disrupt that, only to have to reconfigure it when you get home? Moreover, if you have any smart devices or IP cameras, they'll cease to operate.

Speaking more generally, most consumer routers don't expose all the features this has unless you're willing to pay a premium. They're completely dumbed down by design. This is why third party firmware is often sought after.

Also, this can be powered by USB, whereas most consumer routers require an AC outlet. This lets you get around needing regional travel converters as well as making it really easy to power this from your car or a backup battery.

Anyone know a way I can use my phones hotspot so I can connect devices to that wouldn't use my 10gig tether limit? Would this work?

Well read this: https://forum.openwrt.org/t/was-g...law/102526
Done. One person pointing a finger about GL.inet specifically on the OpenWRT forums, lots of collaboration and attempts to dig deeper without any luck, and an OpenWRT moderator saying "I set this thread to auto lock in a reasonable amount of time unless there's something new and credible to add." Followed by the thread locking itself.

So interesting if true, but this is one person with no one else able to confirm. "Grain of salt" doesn't even begin to cut it.

Thank you. I was trying to figure out what the point of having this was. In my earlier travels I encountered ethernet ports in many hotels, but rarely of late, so didn't see much point in adding another wifi network to an existing (hotel) network for a 10x10 room. Having the built-in VPN seems like the biggest benefit.
I use it as a VPN wifi repeater for all our devices. One major benefit I use our Mango version for is to set it up at home then when you get to the hotel you just plug it in, connect it to the hotel wifi, sign in thru the captive sign in, and after a few moments all your devices are connected instantly and secure thru VPN.
It makes it easy for traveling with multiple family members and kids.
I bring our chromecast and our echo dot and everything connects automatically once the internet is connected. It's so convenient for all those reason we use it for. Especially echo dot for an alarm or bedtime audio books.

I use mine with a Verizon USB modem. Plug it in and it automatically starts tethering. Also use it to connect to my home mikrotik router using WireGuard.
5G modem? Mind sharing a link? Trying to find a compatible USB 5G modem. Or is there a list somewhere?

I used it on an RC cruise over spring break. Worked like a charm. The envy of many guests. Just realize that you need to be within fairly close proximity for the router for it to work. Also - only one device can be connected to the RC account at any time. I let the kids take the router back to their room at night. Which meant I couldn't login on my phone or it would disrupt their connection.
Oh I was definitely near an AP since I was in my cabin at the time attempting to set it up, but it was flat out rejecting the connectivity (I can't 100% remember what error I got, but I know I tried for a while at different times before giving up). The cheapo TP-Link I used instead was way inferior and n-only, so it was surprising how that worked over the AC Beryl in one attempt. Ended up returning it.

Get an Opal and save some cash.
Surely , Opal is great fit for travel with less powerful SoC. But unfortunately, the Opal SoC is outdated cpu architecture not get more support and stuck in openwrt v18

You're just spouting nonsense that's progressively getting more nonsensical.

"The fan is driven by CPU temperature, not how many users are connected"

Do you not understand what load is and what causes it? Of course more users means higher CPU usage which leads to an increase in temperature.

Name one router that doesn't have higher load as more traffic is sent through it. I'm sure all of the major data centers would love to have it.

If you don't understand this basic concept, you obviously won't have a single recourse for how to mitigate or fix it, which is precisely why a majority of the consumer hardware on the market is watered down and holds your hand through every step.

But the fact that you think every piece of hardware should be just as dumbed down so that it receives your stamp of approval is plain ignorance.
Obviously , you don't own it . You have no idea you are talking about.
While the device power on, even not in use after an hour , the fan starts spinning to make noise

Ah, I missed that the second post was yours - sorry. But here's the "official", non-forum version of the information that you got as a reply: https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/e..._wifi_mac/

I can definitely see how "you have to do some math to figure out the MAC address" isn't as straightforward as most vendors, who would either have it in a main admin page, or have one sticker with ALL the MACs listed.
Ah ha! That was the documentation I was looking for. I wonder why I couldnt find it. I also wonder why their tech support didnt send me that link. Thank you.

This is an example of the "support" I got from them:
Q: "How to clone the wireless MAC address? The input is to clone the wired (ethernet) address." Useful to log in with a phone and then clone the Glnet wireless mac address
A: "It works on both Ethernet and Repeater. there is currently an ambiguity in the design of the interface, it will be changed in the next version."

Mine was quiet after streaming movies for a few hours (via wireguard). Or maybe the fan was running but I didn't notice any fan noise.

It did get warm to the touch though.

You can also use GL.Inet GL-MT300N or GLAr150 or any other Glinet travel routers for visible. Lots of info about TTL scipts depending on how you connect your phone to it (USB is preferred or Wifi, I cannot get it to hide data usage using a powered USB to ethernet).

Maybe someone will enlight me, but I never really understood why buying something more powerful than the mini travel routers mentioned above (or equivalent) to get unlimited hotspot with visible or other carriers. They can handle 4 or 5G speed all right. The one with detachable antenna(e) can be retrofitted with larger antenna(e). I have used successfully a yagi 15dBi and a 19dBi flat panel I used to use whilst war driving a LONG time ago.
