For those of you who don't know what this is:

This is a small travel router that connects to an ethernet port of an existing network, OR can be connected to an existing Wi-Fi network and used to create your own personal Wi-Fi network but this router uses a VPN to mask your traffic when used.

It can also be used on Visible to share a phone connection with multiple devices but you will be required to use a TTL hack to make it work.

There are a few ways, the one I use is:
1. Connect phone/laptop to captive login wifi.
2. Connect GL.iNet to power
3. Log in to GL.iNet web interace
4. Change GL.iNet router MAC address to the same as that of your phone/laptop.
5. Connect GL.Inet to hotel WiFi, and it'll work.

A big use for this is also when you have a hotel that charges for, and limits the number of devices that connect to wifi. This isn't as common in the US anymore, but still common internationally. Also, if you have a ton of electronics with you, having this would save you from having to reconfigure each device for the new SSID.

Side note, I have this and it works great, the VPN works well too.

Go to System -> Advanced -> Network -> Firewall - Custom Settings, add the following rules (change TTL value from 66 to what you need) and then hit save:

iptables -t mangle -D POSTROUTING -j TTL --ttl-set 66 -o eth1 ! -p icmp
ip6tables -t mangle -D POSTROUTING -j HL --hl-set 66 -o eth1 ! -p icmpv6
iptables -t mangle -A POSTROUTING -j TTL --ttl-set 66 -o eth1 ! -p icmp
ip6tables -t mangle -A POSTROUTING -j HL --hl-set 66 -o eth1 ! -p icmpv6

ok! photos shows adapter.. my little shadow didnt even come with one. Would you be able to power it from USB-A or from power bricks?
Any recent USB-C charger with variable voltage and amperage will work best.

Ideally, get something with PD.

This expects 3A @ 5V, so you couldn't use a standard USB-A connection without drawing from multiple ports. Those multiplex adapters do work, but I wouldn't plug them into anything expensive.

Can you use this to set up a Ring Camera in a hotel room? Tried on hotel Wi-Fi but their security was not up to Ring's standards so it wouldn't connect.

I have four of the original Beryl routers. Recent firmware update was pushed and caused some issues, but GLInet admitted to that and said they learned a lesson. New app interface is pretty good, and I've rarely had issues with these devices. I use these as xfinty wifi repeaters at different locations so I don't have to login. Looking forward to testing out this wifi6 version.

Surely , Opal is great fit for travel with less powerful SoC. But unfortunately, the Opal SoC is outdated cpu architecture not get more support and stuck in openwrt v18
Wifi and HTTP/TCP protocols are pretty good with backwards support, so no need to update OpenWrt to support anything new for a long, long time. By the time an update may be optimal (not required), something newer and cheaper will be out.

the problem there is very limited openwrt app can run Opal SF19A28 CPU architecture, also stuck in openwrt v18 forever. otherwise it is perfect one

Thanks.. for me - advantage of lower power and being able to power from USB-A is bigger than faster thruput and WiFi6. I am only going to use this in hotels where a lot of rooms provide USB ports and I dont have to pack extra or special adapter for this.

5G modem? Mind sharing a link? Trying to find a compatible USB 5G modem. Or is there a list somewhere?
I believe they are detected like a network interface so any LTE or 5G USB based modem should work. I tested Verizon and AT&T (whatever they sell on their websites) and they both work.

I've use this router powered by either a Fire Stick power supply (5V 1A) or an older Samsung phone supply (5V 2A) and never have any issues with its operation. Maybe using all the bandwidth and full fan operation it would have a problem. I just use whatever supply I grab when setting up my electronics when traveling.
It comes with a nifty power supply that has different plugs for international use, but the potted cable is woefully short and the supply is a bit bigger.

This router does run hotter than I would have expected although I've never heard the fan operate. If you plug a USB thumb drive in that has an aluminum housing (e.g. Micron) the drive gets very hot even when not in use.
