It almost certainly won't. 100W cables should be assumed to be USB2.0 until stated otherwise, for USB-C data connections you'd probably want something with at least the USB 3.1 spec though ideally thunderbolt 3 and above.

Apple scale is so huge, the lightning cable sale is estimated to be around $5B a year in revenues.

To answer the question of why, lightning cannot deliver 65W of power so only suitable for smaller power delivery - so MacBook and IPad moved first.

No, actually USB 2.0 works fine for a Quest Link cable. The Quest 2 only needs around 150 Mbps of bandwidth.

I never once had to think what wattage my thunderbolt cable was or if it was charge only or charge+data. Maybe it was only for the profit. Probably it was. But Apple is a company, and companies only have one main goal: profit. If Dell or Lenovo were in the position to dictate cable design, do you not believe they wouldn't do so? And their phones were so ubiquitous that the thunderbolt plug was a standard in itself. Never once have I not been able to find on on Amazon or Target for roughly the same price as a usb-c cable. Never have I had seen a public charging station that didn't include both standards. Hell, usually there are more usb-x standard connectors since the board that governs usb has changed the plug at least 3 times.

It's a very welcome addition, and a strong reason to finally upgrade for many that have been holding onto older iPhones for 3-5+ years (alongside everything else to be gained). One cable to rule them all, finally (nearly) completing Apple's transition to USB-C. They're on the USB IF (implementers forum), guys... Sure money was a motivating factor, but it also didn't hurt to wait a little longer until USB-C chargers were ubiquitous to finally switch either.. especially as some manufacturers are no longer including wall chargers with their phones anymore.
